Just something that "Fell out of the pencil" and I liked the idea so much I had to ink it. A starship finds itself caught in the gravitational pull of a singularity that seems to be guarded by a strange, arachnid like ship that somehow can withstand the pull of the miniature black hole. Despite having it's engines at maximum thrust, the little starship is doomed. Would the aliens offer aid to the endangered star travelers, or devour them?

Possibly one of my last efforts at actual Science Fiction style illustration using "Traditional" drawing tools and papers.

I had to look that one up. You're right. It does resemble the spiral traps and tracks featured in the Anime. Gads. I'm really out of the loop with what's new in that genre. The Last new Anime I followed was Gasaraki and "Chobits."

This is awesome, and takes me back to something that's now quite an obscure reference--this drawing looks like it could be straight out of the pages of the old DOS sci-fi game Anacreon. For example:

I found the manual and uploaded them all here: https://imgtc.com/a/KreKrzd. The artists there clearly also have a technical-drawing influence, I think. But mostly it's the old school, harsh ink sci-fi illustration style that I find so similar. Very cool

Wow. I believe I have a copy of that first piece someplace. I picked it up in the early 1990s when I was into creating RPGs and art for such games. The last image has a sort of "Steve Gallacci" influence in the ship designs.

Hmm, interesting. The last one reminds me a lot of the Homeworld ship concept art, which again is highly technical and uses pure black colors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJkoBNOPvjU. The drawings start at about 1 minute

I feel kind of shocked having missed this feature. The art and graphic designs I can really relate to, and they appeal to me in much the way the designs of Syd Mead and Roger Dean's works do. Wait A minute... If Yes! did the musical score, could it be Roger Dean had a hand in the designs? Last time I saw Mr. Dean was at the 2004 Comicon International in San Diego. He was pushing habitats of his design.

Oh thank you. Jack 'Kelly' Freas was one of my "Artistic Heroes" which I grew up with, and I would buy used Analog magazines just for the art.

Funny because yesterday i was playing Everspace and i tricked some pirates into a singularity with a scout ship.

Cool move. Larry Niven wrote a short where Space Pirates used super powerful space tugs to tow about a singularity with tractor beams, and use the mini black hole to disable ships by literally ripping the engines out of their victim's ships.

Maybe one day when I learn how to use photoshop better, I'll try to capture the "Extruded black crystal" look to the Spider Ship which I saw in my head. It looked like it was grown, not manufactured.

Thank you. Yeah. I gotta admit drawing the spider ship was a lot of fun. I had to "Think like an Arachnid" to get the look just right.

Lo rez Bud. I haven't quite figured out how to work this new scanner properly yet. It's a tad more complicated than my old iP4300.

Oh yes. One of the few Disney features I recall where the trailer was more exciting than the actual feature. I liked the robots though.

This is awfully jaggy when viewed at full screen! But I like the space-horror angle that this picture has going on. Actually, that phrase you wrote would make a great tag line for a movie!

Heh. Maybe in my declining years I should change my Moniker from "Cartoonist/illustrator" to "Caption Writer," Eh? I know I'd like to be the guy who does the voice overs for movie trailers, but I look lousy in a Turtleneck.

Pshht, everybody looks good in a turtleneck, unless the turtleneck itself is ugly :P And I have to say, my previous comment was pretty lousy since I didn't even say anything about the picture itself other than how jaggy it looks. I do think it's a cool picture, just...jaggy!
It's like the contrast was set too high or something. Do you still have an unedited version of this scan?

Technically I've just been having trouble figuring how to operate the new Scanner. The original was only 5 X 7.5" and the machine decided to blow it up to fit the page. I didn't notice the flaws until after I posted the image. I mainly wanted to get some new images posted here on FA really. Thar's all.

I've always wondered about that. While up in the Bay area of Oakland CA I noticed a LOT of the art had curving, dreamlike lines and soft edges, most likely inspired by Marijuana smoke. Hookah smoking was also a new fad starting out, and of course there was the fight going on to legalize selling the plant's products. One of my friends tried to get me hooked on Absinthe, but I felt ingesting nearly fatal doses of wormwood wasn't for me.

Absinth is evil, and if they ever legalize sweet Cousin Mari, I fear this will only lead to the release of mass produced, low quality stuff like you get as medical marihuana here in Germany x3

OH! I hadn't thought of that. Yes, I fear folks getting really sick off badly stored THC or something. Commercializing the stuff can make things worse. Perhaps they need to lighten up on the restrictions?

That would be the preferable option. I mean, here many who could them legally with a doctors prescription still turn to the blackmarket or buy it in the Netherlands for example. Since the quality is much higher.

I rarely use the stuff myself, but I get the impression that the stuff from the Netherlands would be of far better quality than the stuff we get from Mexico here.
