It's never a happy story for the Eldar. Always on the verge of extinction and with not much hope to look forward to when they eventually die. If your fortunate, your life will be protected safely into a soul stone. If not, then you soul gets devoured by Slaanesh. Coming across the soul stones of the those who had fallen is just a sad reminder of all of this.
