Endless Realms bestiary - Leopard Spider
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Another low-level, swamp-dwelling cutie, as per my art director's request ;) She suggested another giant spider creature, and I thought, what's a scary spider? Wolf spiders have always freaked me out, so I went for a predatory spider that actively hunts and kills rather than a web-spinning one. My idea for this one is she lurks in tree branches, waiting for prey to pass along underneath before pouncing, with leopard-like spots for camouflage, sensitive "fluffy" spines that act as sensory whiskers, and big foreward-facing, binocular vision for good depth perception when leaping.

I'm not actually an arachnophobe, but that bug squicks me out completely! Which is, I suspect, the effect you were going for. Well done!

I don't know when I went from being "normal" to "wanting a snake" :b I remember being, like, a teenager and wanting to go to a reptile show and they had all these baby snakes there and I remember loving them then, but that wasn't "the change" :V Although it wasn't until my sister-in-law got a snake that I REALLY thought snakes were adorable :b
My mom is absolutely terrified of snakes (in large part because of a bad experience with a rattlesnake), but I was about 8 years old and with my friends and we went into the woods and found some grass and garter snakes and I thought they were the coolest, prettiest, and even cutest things. I started going to my school library and checking out books on snakes and stuff and I learned more than a lot of high school biology students knew XD I knew what a pit viper was, I knew what a constrictor was, knew how to ID them, knew about different types of venom. It was amusing...well not to my mom, but yeah XD
Ball pythons are super easy - just need a heat lamp, a box or cave or something they can curl up inside and feel safe, and a big enough water bowl they can sit in if they want to. They need to be fed only once a week, but can go months without eating, and will only poop as often as they eat, so not much to clean.

I can see this type of spider possibly being beneficial to a party or the locals... Especially if like some species of 'Jumping Spiders' It prefers to hunt other spiders.
To modify that hunting pattern, I would say it stalks prey from above, expertly tracking and understanding where it's prey is or soon will be even when it moves around out of sight for long distances... (To scale, Jumping spiders can stalk prey from up to 3 meters away, breaking line of sight and still knowing exactly where the prey last was. This could add some suspense to a Party of adventurers being stalked by a Clutter of Leopard spiders all working together for a particularly 'Jump' Scare encounter. Especially if they were camped out somewhere in one location and gave the pack plenty of time to surround and find good places to 'Jump in' and deliver.... hugs.

It has been a little while since I posted anything silly so lets go. For your lovely spider why don't we make them mounts. The Yakshi Keeper have to protect their lands from an invasion force, and a special force of them ride these vicious spiders, while small little seekers help keep them perfectly camouflaged. The ultament game of cat and mouse. Making sure that anyone going by gets ambushed. This group only being a special force while in thick woods or swamps.
Spiders are some of the creepiest and most nightmarish things on the face of the planet...
