2.5 years. I kept a WIP blog that can be found here that has details about construction.
There's no rings actually (adds too much weight). The scales are sewn onto a stretch fake leather fabric (the material shown on my palms). The benefit is that it's lighter and the scales fit to the body better, the downside is the threads sometimes break and I have to repair them (but I haven't actually lost a scale yet, they've only gotten loose so far).
