I like the contrast of light on the two sides of the monument and the obvious break in the construction in 1854 and didn't begin again until well after the Civil War in 1879 and was finally completed in 1884.
I try to look at the monument, covering up the yellowed blocks where the ivory blocks of limestone end, and imagine a Washington Monument that stood unfinished at that height.

I understand your sentiments...I grew up at the New Jersey shore. I worked at a gas station less than a mile from the beach and still folks from out of town would pull in and as, "Yo, buddy. Which way to da watah?" It was painfully tempting to point them west and tell them to follow the signs to the NJ Parkway...north. :)
