Yes there was
the Gti was a front weel driven 2.0 engine, werry same used in the GT4 but with a budget gearbox, there was a even smaler one but it never really saw its way to europe.

I know exactly what you mean, I put my bug next to a Volvo C30, a small car today, and it looked positively miniscule.
