A dual-purpose contest entry -- for the Mythological Creature contest by Eternity9 (dA) and the Monster contest by Shadowmeere! Both contests end relatively soon (the first ends on the 9th, the second ends tomorrow), but there's still time to enter if you're interested!
This is a hypothetical mythological creature/monster, and is not heavily inspired by or based off of any stories in particular, though the Irish Banshee was a great inspiration for the withered appearance.
Origin:
Bhris (Irish: "broke") are malevolent spirits born of the wrongdoing of a human. The colored bead, glowing eyes, and claws are a color that are representative of the crime, based on typical color theory -- for an example, this specific Bhris has a bead meant to imply that the soul of the person that inadvertently created it is a coward, or committed deceit of some kind. A Bhris is created upon the action of the person, but is not necessarily spawned near where the act was performed.
A Bhris can have any appearance, though the long snakelike body, thin hair, and basic coloration will always be present. The "broken" nature of this spirit is evident, as they often have misshapen or misplaced limbs, asymmetrical placement of said limbs, and a permanent haunting smile in a gaping jaw. The creature is always uncanny, and often inspires fear in any who see one. They are genderless.
Location (Where It Can Be Found):
Ruins (castles, churches, landmarks, etc.), abandoned buildings (warehouses, etc.), cemeteries, gnarled forests
Purpose (What It Does):
The sole purpose of a Bhris is to seek out the one who caused its creation, and to snuff out their life. The Bhris will seek endlessly and tirelessly until their target is found, and then make any attempt to kill their prey. They do not seek out any other nourishment, resources, or entertainment. Only the victim of the Bhris can be physically touched or attacked by it, and are also the only person that can destroy the creature. The only way to kill a Bhris is to atone for the crime; the atonement varies, and must be completed before the Bhris reaches the victim. The atonement can be completed right up to the point before the claws of the creature make contact -- upon which, no matter where it is or how close it is to killing its quarry, will vanish in a wisp of mist.
