Starfish, also known as Sea Stars with the latin name Asteroidea, are carnivorous invertebrates that can live up to 35 years in the wild. The larger of the Starfish varieties can reach up to 9.5 inches and weigh as much as 11lbs. These unique creatures do not possess either a brain or blood. Rather, their nervous system is spread through their arms and their version of blood is really filtered sea water. Scientists have urged the change from the name Starfish to Sea Star as they are not really fish and are actually Echinoderms related to creatures such as the Sand Dollar and Sea Urchins. Sea Stars are found in a wide range of habitats from tropical waters to cold seafloors. Although, there are no freshwater sea stars and only a few of them will live in brackish waters. Approximately 2,000 species have been found with the five-arm varieties being the most common, although species with 10, 20, and, amazingly, even 40 arms existing. All of these species have in common a bony, calcified skin that protects them from the majority of predators. Often, Sea Stars will be bright colors that work to either camouflage them or scare off predators. An amazing ability known of Sea Stars would be their regenerative skills. They are able to regrow limbs, or even entire bodies, when torn apart. This is enabled by housing all, or most, of their organs in their long arms. While most Sea Stars require a central body to be intact in order to regrow limbs, there are a few species that have the amazing ability to regrow an entire body from simply a small bit of a severed limb. In order to eat, they are able to eat prey from outside of their bodies. This is accomplished by using tiny, suction-cupped tube feet that can pry open clams or oysters. Their sack-like cardiac stomach then emerges from their mouths and creeps inside of the shell of their prey. Digesting then happens while inside of the shells before the stomach is pull back into its body once more.
