Endless Realms bestiary - Mephistophilus
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
The art director requested a few more baddies for the bestiary, specifically more demonic Koros, and asked if I could come up with a few concepts myself. As far as I knew, we didn't have any classic "lawful evil"-type demons (or devils, if you want to get technical :V), so I made us one! I felt, given such a classic concept, it should have a classic appearance - however, I opted for Baphomet rather than "red guy with wings, horns, goat legs, and a pointed tail" because I like the Baphomet design more :b It should be noted that my take includes the breasts since Baphomet is hermaphroditic (it seems they're often omitted), but obviously for the purpose of a family-friendly game, I couldn't make them particularly visible :b
Entirely lawful and good to its word, it is deviously clever with language and misdirection, with the mortals who deal with it almost never benefiting, and is not above working with other Koros to drive targets into the perfect position, be it greed or desperation or blackmail, so that Mephistophilus can then come in and literally seal their fate - once written, its words are law and cannot be changed, and "The arms bear the Latin words SOLVE (separate) and COAGULA (join together), i.e., the power of "binding and loosing" usurped from God."

Heh, something like that was part of the twist ending for Suikoden 3, an old RPG. Basically, you spend the whole time fighting against a bad guy, not realising he is basically only trying to save the world from a future where the world has become unbalanced and Order reigns supreme, and basically things like emotions and personality have disappeared entirely.
I think anyone would be a devil if they had to write a paper and then get a failing grade on it. He put all his passion into it, and then he snapped. Going completely evil and making it proven to everyone that his words are law. Then when you fall for his wicked traps, he will force you to write your name on his papers, to prove that he has the law over them.
Great work as always

XD Yeah. I feel like if this were a true oldschool illustration, it'd have graphic boobs and a sporting erection because oldschool stuff didn't shy away from the nature of things that were sexual http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia.....a_2507863b.jpg from Pompeii, for instance. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/.....sh-Museum.html is a good article related to it.
Heh, yeah. I remember when we first moved to Scotland, our roommate was sort of good-humouredly giving us an introduction to Scottish culture, and mentioned the Sun, which is a kind of tabloidy junk/pop newspaper - he said we hoped we don't mind nudity, because it generally always has naked photos in it XD Except you don't find it wrapped up and unreadable in the stores, it's just sitting out where everyone can see, haha.
