Upper mid deck you say? According to the Wiki Article on the Plainfield, the vessel was powered by 2 Turbine engnes similar to those used in the F-4 Phantom fighter jet, plus two Diesel engines for maneuvering. So yeah, I'll bet there were Asbestos covers around the jet engine exhaust pipes.
