"I'll be back in a bit neighs! I promise I won't stay out too long!"
The shire closed the screen door behind him, his dog wagging her tail behind it, typical blank expression on her muzzle as she begged to go wherever it was everyone else seemed to go. "Sorry fuzzmutt... going by myself, this time." Flare chuckled and walked down the driveway, a set of keys jingling in his pocket.
It had been just last week that he had been a bundle of nerves at the DMV. Even at 26, he couldn't shake himself free of every teens worst nightmare: taking the driving test. But that was over now- he had passed, and his permit validated into a full fledged license. No more "terrorizing" his beloved friesian in the passenger seat. Just the thought brought a smile to the heavy horses muzzle, and he waved to his hoss in the window as he got into his car, a 1996 Subaru Legacy GT. It was beat up in some ways, well kept in others... but most importantly, it was all his. He turned the key and the engine purred to life, a sound the shire was starting to enjoy hearing.
The stallion pulled out of his driveway and took off, putting some relaxing music on the stereo as he got moving. He was headed to a familiar destination, but this time it was going to be quite different, indeed. Once he was out of town, the buildings became more sparse, and the trees and rocks more prevalent- Yosemite somehow looked different from the left side of the car.
"Ah, Equus...." Flare sighed wistfully to himself. He knew he owed much of what he was today to his devoted friesian, not the least of which was the very car he was driving. But it went past material items... it felt he had "grown up", if only just a bit. Equus still called him "silly colt", so that hadn't changed... and really, Flare didn't want it to. With their fifth anniversary coming up this year, the stallion felt he'd only really gotten his act together recently, a disservice to his beloved, to be sure.
"Better late than never..." Flare mused to himself as he passed the Yosemite gates. The tourism season was just starting... soon enough it would be nigh impossible to get in here without tons of RVs and the like clogging the roads. "Here we are..." The shire smiled and pulled off the road at one of the parks many vista points, unbuckling his seatbelt and getting out of the car for a stretch. There was a nice rock formation on the side that was a good size for the tall equine, and he sat admiring the gift that had gotten him here.
Flare smiled a bit. For the longest time, he had professed that a car was just that- a car. But looking over the green vehicle before him, he had to admit he was wrong. It wasn't just a car. It was his car- and with it brought responsibility, freedom, and a fair bit of maturity as well. Such a great and beautiful gift Equus had given him.... the shire found himself tearing up a bit. "Equus..." The shire gazed out across the valley, El Capitan standing proudly in the skyscape.
As the shire climbed back in to continue on, he felt a new sense of resolve, of dedication... one might even say purpose. But above all else, he realized with the new freedom he had, there was still no place he'd rather be than back home, with his hoss. The shire adjusted his mirrors a bit before getting back on the road- and back on the road of life.
