Endless Realms bestiary - Malamii
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
"It was the seed of your own fears and doubts that destroyed you," it said, smiling innocently. "I only helped it grow."
The art director requested a few more baddies for the bestiary, specifically more demonic Koros, and asked if I could come up with a few concepts myself. My inspiration for this demon was essentially the figurative devil that sits on people's left shoulders, whispering evil influence into their minds. The malamii is frail and physically unimposing, and in fact never directly commits any evil itself, instead subverting goodness and order through suspicion, paranoia, and mistrust from which it certainly derives a kind of twisted pleasure.
You know how in situations where people are put under stress and begin to fear for their well-being, like, say, any survival/horror drama, and people start doing terrible, crazy things to others in hopes of saving themselves? This is what the malamii does :b

So this is the little devil that sits on people's shoulders and whispers evil into their ears. He's a bit frightening to look at, if only because I see his purpose to be a bit more destructive and insidious than more brazen fiends.
I can't emphasize just how wonderful this piece is. It speaks to me on so many levels.

It's comic book lore; wasn't mentioned in the movies. The cool thing though is that the prophesy was written into the comics in the 70's or 80's and actually ended up happening in the 00's.
The irony is that it basically pretty much was the seed of doubt that brought it all to fruition.
