This Great Tit was hopping around in this tree, collecting caterpillars to take to its young in the nearby nest box. The weather was superb, though light wasn't fantastic under the foliage so (given the necessity for full zoom) I had to bump ISO up to 200, hence the slight noise.

Thank you! Yep, the background blurriness does help the bird stand out better. That's a result of two things, and apologies for getting slightly technical here! The first is a wide aperture (low f-number) which reduces the depth of field. The other one is the high zoom: this doesn't change the depth of field (despite what many people will tell you) but magnifies existing blur, so you still get an illusion of a shallower DOF. There's an interesting (and quite long) explanation of this, with examples, here:

*nods* You can indeed. You need to use aperture priority, which is marked "Av" on the mode dial. Set that as low as it will go (I think it's f2.8 on your camera), use full zoom even when it doesn't seem you need to, and see what you can come up with. It may take a while to get the hang of it, but it does work eventually! =:)
