This week, besides losing a comedic legend, (see: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/23139456/ ), we also lost a Saturday morning cartoon and advertising icon that you've probably never heard of, but almost certainly know his creations. His name was Joe Harris, the commercial illustrator who created Underdog, as well as the Trix Rabbit and his famous slogan ("Silly rabbit, TRIX are for Kids!")
Commercial Artists are the unsung heroes of American Pop-Culture, and are viewed as being the "lower-than-whale-shit-bastard-of-the-bastard-offspring-whore-of-the-art-world" by the Acedemia. (At least, that was the impression I got from my "fine arts" professors and [some of my] fellow students, and I studied *BOTH.) They don't get the recognition, respect, credit, (or even money) they deserve, but what they produce reaches a far larger audience than and any so-called "serious artist" can ever dream of. (What, cartoonists aren't serious?) In a way, they, we, are the underdogs of the art world.
So here's to the Underdog in all of us.
