Disclaimer : Sorry I'm late, but I wasn't having the right mood last week. THE LAST CHAPTER OMG Also as the previous one, it will countain time lapses. Also it's the longest chapter. And feels aboard, warning.
"GRIDDLE GRIDDLE GRIDDLE GRIDDLE !!!" Herman shouted throughout the corridors, running like crazy with an old dusty book in his hand, almost slippering at every turn.
He was looking for his wife like crazy around, tripping once or twice. When he realized she might have been in their room, he rushed to it like a madman. When he arrived to her room and slammed it open in a loud "BANG", making the poor princess jumping as she was quietly reading a magazine of food laying on the bed.
"AAAH !" she screamed "THE HELL ?"
"HONEY !" he shouted with a hint of enthusiasm in his voice, panting hard as he ran everywhere to find her "Listen ! I might have found a way !"
"What ?" she rised an eyebrow, still a hand on her heart because of the scare from some seconds before "A way for what ?"
"A way to have a baby !"
She blinked.
"A way for-"
He interrupted her by slamming the grimoire open on her bed, sitting on the bed next to her in a quick motion, and turnt the pages frenetically.
"Come on where was it where was it..." the old knight grumbled to himself "AH-HA ! Found !"
The old knight crashed his forefinger on a page on which was written a description going with a sketch of a uterus-shaped plant.
"Look, Griddle ! I was randomly looking in the castle's library how to get magical flowers and trees to make our garden and unique among the kingdoms', and I found this book about fantastic plants, and then I found this page ! This might help us !"
"Salad ?"
"Not just any salad, love !" he grabbed her by the shoulders before forcing her in his enthusiasm to lean on the book "Read by yourself !"
And so she did, in a loud voice.
" 'The Wonderful Weed of Womberful Wonders is a plant that is almost extinct nowadays due to excessive use, the few last specimens being found in the Northern mountains of Wales guarded by a gryffon. That flower, when eaten raw, has the power to enable a woman, whatever her species, to bear a child or an egg in her womb despite menopause, an accident that made her sterile or natural sterility, but only once by flower ; the woman would become sterile again after the labor. However, the guardian, if you do make it to him and solve his enigma, will allow you to only take one.' "
Her eyes shone with hope as her heart beat fast.
"OH MY GOD HERMAN DO YOU THINK WHAT I'M THINKING ???" she caught Herman by his collar.
"I DO !!!" he enthusiastically lifted her up as they twirled laughing maniacally.
"I need this flower !" the princess poked his chest "I really need it ! Be a knight for your lady, for once !"
"I will, my beloved !" the knight proudly said posing heroically and pulling out his sword to point at the ceiling "I will vainquish the Evil, solve the Riddle, and bring thee the o so wanted vegetal Present which will gift us of a spawn of our own-"
"Shut up and do me !" his wife interrupted, pulling him by his tail back on the bed.
It did surprise him, but he chuckled evilly and bring the blanket over them.
It had been hours he had been flying to Wales. Sir Herman was exhausted, panting like a dying horse and weakly flapping in the air. Once he was over the entrance of a rocky cave, he couldn't hold it anymore. His wings spasmed, and he crashed head first on the ground like a fox when it tries to catch a mouse or a rabbit beneath earth. He helped himself out with his sword and spat pebbles.
As he entered the cave, he took a torch out of his bag and lit it up with his fire breath. He carefully walked along the path. The place was moist with bones on the ground. He uncomfortably shivered but kept going. He couldn't help thinking those were the remainings of people who probably just wanted to have a child. How sad, their lovers got no child but became widows.
But as he was lost in his reflection, he stepped on a rock that sinked in the ground. He heard a click and had the reflex to jump on the ground on his right ; good reflex, arrows were thrown in his direction. But as he landed on the earth again, he activated another trap, a gigantic hatchet swung from the ceiling, he rolled over to dodge it, only the feather on his helmet got cut in two. As he noticed it, he sighed in annoyance. But as he got up, he helped himself leaning on a stick that happened to be a joystick. Once activated, the floor under his feet. He fell, screech, but grabbed a parasite plant that was going out of the wall. He looked beneath, he saw sharp spikes, and skeletons on those. He gulped, especially as he felt the plant was breaking.
"No no no no no !" he frenetically repeated as if the plant had ears.
As it didn't, it ended up to break, and he fell, screaming... before flying out of the hole.
"How stupid I am, I forgot I had wings even though I used them to come here."
Herman's torch had died, he lit it up again. After minutes later, he found stairs. But as soon he put a feet, he found out those were slippery, and he went down the stairs emetting "Ouch !", "Pooh !" and "Ow !" each time he hit a step, until the end of the stairs.
"What a man would do to become a father..." he painfully whined, getting up and making his back loudly crack.
However, he had the feel he was being watched. Still keeping the same pose as when he was making his back crack, his expression turnt to horrified. An army of skeletons was there, all holding swords.
Only listening to his bravery within... Herman screeched like a little girl and tried to go up the stairs, slipping everytime on the first step. Panicked, he saw them approaching slowly, and looked around him, sweating cold. This was when a door he located up the stairs -HOW COMES HE HAD NOT SEEN IT EARLIER he thought-, but he needed to reach it without being sliced in two. He pulled out his sword and his shield, and in a war scream threw himself in the bunch of undead. Tightening his grisp on his sword, he cut tibia bones in 2, crashed skulls, sliced ribcages, his shield taking every enemy blow and sometimes using it as a weapon itself, or even using his fire breath or his tail to whip and feet to kick. He was surrounded, but he fought with courage.
The fight lasted one good hour. Sir Herman panted hardly, some of his clothes were torn apart, he sadly sighed at those. He was surrounded with now dead undead remains. A skull moved its jaw as to bite or to talk, but it had no time, the old dragon stomped on it brutally, turning the bones into ashes. Flipping his wig sassily in a "Hmf !", he looked up, and wondered how he could climb those stairs until this door, while cleaning up his glasses with a piece of a zombie's cape. This was how he got an idea. He ripped the cape in 2, and wrapped each half around his feet. He put back his sword in its sheath, and using 2 skeletons' swords as climbing pickets, climbed his way back up the slippery staircase.
Once he had arrived to the door, he opened it carefully, but the fact he turnt the doorknob was enought to activate a mechanism that caused the doors to ceiling to slowly go down. He looked far before him and he saw a door, open, from what a white light was coming out. He quickly rushed, the ceiling coming closer and closer. He was almost crushed but decided to use his wings to quickly fly his way to the open door just in time ! He fell on the ground loudly, and painfully got up.
After he rubbed his head, he noticed he was in a crystal room, glimmering everywhere. His awe got interrupted however as a huge beast jumped in front of him. He felt all small, seeing what or rather who was standing before him, looking down at him in all the meanings of the terma : a big gryffon, whose eagle-like arms were crossed, he was standing on his lion legs.
"Who dareth troubling this holy place ?" he threateningly asked.
"I... I am Sir Herman the Nearsighted..." Herman stammered, still trying to stand up "Faithful knight and son-in-law of the Queen Mum of Coalmeliard... I am here for my wife, Princess Griddle of Coalmeliard, cannot bear children anymore because of a tragical accident that occured 3 years ago now."
"I understand, now you want an example Wonderful Weed of Womberful Wonders for her to give you a descendant, right ?" the monster resumed.
"That's correct, sir." the knight nodded.
"Well, this is not as easy as it sounds, sir knight, for if I let anyone take those precious plants of life with them, the variety would disappear forever, so one must prove if they are worth to take it away with them. You proved your strenght by surviving all the traps, but now, I must test your intelligence."
"Yes... I read it in an old book... A riddle."
"Ooooh, I see you informed yourself well, dragon." he said, opening his eagle wings. "Art thou prepared ?"
"I am." he answered, clenching his fist, bearing a serious look.
"Then... what is green, going up and down ?"
Silence filled the room. Sir Herman wondered if he had heard well. What ?!...
"Er... a pea in an elevator ?" he tried, unsure of the obvious easiness.
The gryffon's face switched to an astonished expression.
"My, sir... You are gifted with great intelligence." said he.
"Oh ?" he pretended to ask, with a bored look.
"You answered in not even 10 seconds ! What witchcraft is this ?"
"Oh, let us not exagerate..."
"Then, I suppose you and your wife will be granted a child." said he, snapping his fingers.
A part of the crystal floor opened, revealing a hidden garden, entirely made of uterus-like flowers. Sir Herman slowly dropped his jaw. The creature carefully picked one of them and gave it to him, only taking one of its seeds.
"Forgive me, I do this so I could plant it and make it grow as a new flower, and also so you would not do it yourself. This flower is immortal unless if picked or eaten. Be home early, it fades after 2 weeks. I wish you good lucky, you clever warrior."
He bowed to him, handing him the flower. Herman carefully look at it and put it in his bag.
"Oh Goodness, thank you so so much, sir Gryffon !"
He turnt, caught with surprise by a noise. A door opened behind him, showing him the outside, with the sky and the other mountains.
"Good luck, Sir Herman the Nearsighted. Be blessed by your gift and take care of the future little life."
"I will ! Thank you !" he eagerly said, waving at him while leaving and opening his wings to the sky.
Night had fallen. Princess Griddle was impatiently waiting when she heard a scream followed by a loud crash on her balcony. Sir Herman was back, tired of a several-hours long flight. She quickly opened the window and helped him getting up, worried to see him with so many scratches and his clothes so torn.
"You're back !" she said, covering his face in kisses "Are you hurt ? Are you okay ?"
"I am, I am..." he panted, dizzy.
"Yeah yeah you always are." she crudely cut, hiding her relief, but she was jus too impatient "Where is the flower ?!"
He made her quiet just by rising his forefinger, before sinking in his bag and proudly pulling out the flower ; he was relieved to see the crash had not damaged it. Griddle's eyes lit up. Griddle snatched the Wonderful Weed of Womberful Wonders away from his hands. Oh God, she will finally be a mother ! She stared at it a moment, looked up at her husband, who nodded with a tender smile, looked at it again before putting it fully in her mouth, munching (it wasn't that bad), loudly swallowing and emitting a soft burp that made her put her hand on her mouth with a slight pink blush and an embarrassed look and made Herman giggle.
"Do you need a glass of water ?" he asked.
"No, thank you, the book didn't say if I could drink afterward or no, so I prefer waiting for a couple of hours."
She looked at her belly, touching it. She felt nothing changed.
"Do you think it worked ?" the princess asked.
"There is only one way to know~" her husband murred with a vile smirk, putting his bag aside not leaving his oggling eyes from her.
She had not the time to react he pushed her back in the bedroom, and closed the balcony's window behind them. Griddle's excited giggle could be heard through it a few seconds later.
5 months and 16 days later
And it had worked ! 2 weeks after that night, Griddle had felt nauseous again, and the doctor confirmed her it was indeed pregnancy. Sir Herman rejoiced, but his young wife didn't immediatly, she was mefiant a miscarriage could happen. She decided to be very careful this time. She rarely went downstairs, Herman would bring her food and people would visit her, and when she truly needed to go downstairs for a walk for her lungs' and muscles' good, she was always in company of someone who could prevent a tragedy to happen on the stairs, and she walked very carefully. It had been 3 years, almost 4 she had been walking barefoot like most dragons, no matter the fashion, as she despised high heels now. He belly was getting bigger and bigger, and her mood swings angrier and angrier and her cravings hungrier hungrier, and no miscarriage had happened, the couple was very happy, Griddle rejoiced at last ; so did Queen Mum, who found hope again. Sometimes Calida put her sons on Griddle's belly to hear or feel anything. Talking about kicks, those were more frequent than on her first pregnancy, the baby was very lively in there ! His or her parents immediatly made a connexion with him or her thanks to those, and the mother-to-be swore to be very, very vigilent with him or her, so a tragedy would never happen. She was still a bit sad she would never get a second, but it wasn't time to complain.
However, it happened she got her contractions 15 days before the due date. Prematurity. It had been hours she was in labor in her bedroom, crying and screeching, her worried mother holding her hand and the royal doctor telling her to push. Out of the bedroom, Sir Herman was turning in circles very nervously, biting his claws. With him was his brother Sir Crisptopher. Also, side note, Sir Aglowvaine was under her balcony, hearing her cries of pain, and laughing at those. Let's go back to our main characters, shall we ?
"It's too early..." Herman repeated anxiously "It's too early... I don't understand, the flower... If something happened ? It would have been our only chance to be parents !..."
"Calm down, brother." Sir Crisptopher said trying to reassure him "5 months would have been too early indeed, but 5 months and half are fine, the egg will be just a bit small but if it hatches after 3 full months, the baby will just be a bit small but will have no health problems. It was my case, remember !"
"Yes, I know I know !... But what if it doesn't hatches after 3 full months and the baby would be very weak ? And and and what if the labor happens bad and what if the egg is stilllayed or what if it gets broken or what if Griddle dies or what if it and Griddle die at the same time and and and and-"
Crisptopher didn't wait for more, he slapped him and handed him a paper bag.
"You calm the heck down." he seriously ordered.
Herman just took the paper bag weakly and breathed in it.
In the bedroom :
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH !" Griddle suddenly shouted in the most painful way imaginable.
"GRIDDLE HONEY HONEY MY HAND !" Queen Mum shouted in pain too.
"MAKE IT STOP YOU OLD CROOK !" the princess roared between 2 cries to the doctor between her legs.
"It's almost there !..." the doctor said, very scared.
In the corridor :
"GRIDDLEEEEEEEEEEEE !" Herman cried out, crouching to the door.
"Actually I'm more worried for the people around her." Crisptopher commented.
"Only push a bit more, your highness..."
So she did, tears running down her cheeks.
"HnnnnnnnnnggggaaaaAAAAAAAH !!!"
Sir Herman wanted to break the door at every painful cry she pushed.
"Alright it's coming it's coming... There !" the doctor exclaimed.
Griddle, exhausted and hurt, fell on her pillow, Queen Mum left her hand to look with glee at the little black egg with purple dots wrapped in a towel the doctor was holding with a smile. The door to the bedroom opened, Sir Herman jumped like a rabbit.
"Oh God doctor ! How did it go ?!"
"Well, it was very emotionally exhausting for all of us", the royal doctor explained, "but the princess is fine, and look at this."
He showed him the egg. Sir Herman's hands shook, his breath almost stopped. It was there. What he had struggled for in the cave. What Griddle had been bearing in her for months. What they had wanted for so long. It looked so tiny, so fragile. A little tear ran down his cheeks, as he carefully took it.
"It's... Beautiful !..." he sniffed.
"I told you it would go well." his brother nudged him "Congratulations Herman."
"The egg is a bit smaller than supposed to be due to the fact it is premature", the doctor explained, "but it is not problematic. The baby will just be bit small but will have no health issues if things happen normally."
"AH ! told you." Crisptopher commented.
"Oh, Sir Herman !" Queen Mum cried in joy, wiping her tears away with her tissue "You made me so happy ! Not only you are a great friend and a great knight who married and made my daughter happy, but now you grant me with a new grandchild and will make her happier !"
Sir Herman ignored them and went to the bedroom, sitting next to Griddle who was restin, eyes closed. She did go through a lot.
"Griddle, my love..." he sweetly cooed in her earhole.
"Hmm... What ?..." she painfully answered, hardly opening an eye.
"Look... We did it... You did it, you were very strong..." he kissed her tample as he delicately put the egg wrapped in its towel in har arms.
Her eyes widely opened.
"Oh my !..."
She held it. A cute egg. Her egg. Their egg. She finally had one. They finally had. Her eyes were shiny.
"Oh my..."
She shook in sobs, crying in joy, hugging her precious treasure, Herman hugging them both himself with a new tear of joy.
"Finally Herman, finally..." she sobbed with a smile "It's just so perfect... Our egg is perfect... I can't believe it were are finally parents..."
"We are... Oh Griddle I love you so much..."
"I love you too, Herman..."
They kissed, and Griddle put a kiss on the egg, and Herman kept hugging her.
"Griddle... Have you thought of names yet ?"
She looked at the ceiling, thinking.
"Hmm... I like 'Blaze'." she answered with a smile.
" 'Blaze' ?" he repeated.
"Well, it's cute and classy at the same time, it would go both for a male or for a female and the little one was extremely lively in me, like a blaze."
She felt a new kick threw the shell, which made her let out a "Oh !" followed by a tender giggle.
"Well, if it's your choice, so be it !" Herman tenderly said, caressing the egg.
However, the princess felt sleepy and handed it to her old husband, before falling in Morpheus' arms. Herman shrugged and rocked the egg.
3 months later
The shell had been shaking and breaking for 2 hours now. It was only a matter of time for "Blaze" to come out. 3 full months, the parents were relieved, but still they were holding hands, very nervous ; the royal doctor was with them, though, to be sure the premature egg would hatch normally.
For those 3 months, the parents were blissful, alterning who nursed the egg, always keeping it warm and hugging him, very carefully. Still Griddle was nervous each time she carried it with her, the staircase accident that happened 4 years ago having traumatized her, always being unsure about herself and fearing to make it fall, especially as Prince Aglowvaine was making fun of that, telling her she will end up to break it as she was an "accidental child killer" according to his words, but Herman was there to reassure her and to threaten his brother-in-law with a new punch, making him step back ; he had bad memories about his last punch.
After hours, after a little arm and a little foot that broke free out of the shell, the whole egg cracked open, revealing a tiny green hatchling.
"It's a boy ! Congratulations !" the doctor constated with joy.
It was a boy indeed, with tiny horns, and plump lips and thin snout like Herman's and a tail ending with an arrow like Herman, who rubbed his eyes with his tiny hands because of the sudden light hitting him for the first time in his life. The married couple's hearts molt at his sight, their eyes sparkling.
"Oh God..." Princess Griddle muttered.
"Oh God..." Sir Herman repeated, muttering too.
The baby, as big as a hand (usually newborn dragons are as a big as a hand and half), noticed them, and maybe recognized them with their smell. He clumsily sat, and looked up at them, smiling with his teethless gums
"Scree !" he purred for the first time in his life.
His parents looked at each other, both had a huge grin and a waterfall of joy going out for their eyesockets, sobbing uncontrolably, and kissed. The doctor took him, which made the baby emit other reptilian "Scree" out of surprise or maybe fear as it was somebody he didn't know, and washed him and wrapped him in a blue towel he handed to the princess.
"Congratulations", he said happily, "he is in perfect health, he is just smaller than average hatchlings."
The baby was stretching his hands toward Griddle who smiled tenderly at him and took her in her arms, and hugged him, he rubbed his head on her chest, emitting happy reptilian noises.
"I don't care..." she said "He is perfect... Hello, Blaze..."
Sir Herman neared to him, and Blaze noticed him, and touched his snout, making his father softly chuckling.
"He looks just like me..." the knight sniffed, giving him his finger, which the newhatched grabbed.
"He will be as handsome as you." Griddle hugged her son more and kissed his head.
"We did it, Griddle, we are parents..." he said, holding her by her waist "If I knew I would ever be one at my age..."
"And me after the accident..." she said, opening her dress and starting to breastfeed the dragonlet "Thank you, Herman. So much."
"Thank you you too, we made him together." he kisssed her on her lips.
The remained in their bedroom all day long, enjoying their first moments as a family. Soon, the doctor informed Queen Mum, who opened all her Champagne bottles to celebrate, Princess Calida was happy too. Sloth and Charles, now 5 and 4 respectively, clutched her dress, which caught her attention.
"What is happening, mommy ?" Sloth asked.
"Granny is happy because auntie Griddle and unca Herman became parents, sweetie." Calida explained "They have a baby, now."
"Where did they find it ?" Charles asked.
"I will tell you when you will be older, sweetheart. You have a cousin, now, and you two will get to play with him when he will be older."
"No way !" said Prince Aglowvaine as he entered the throne room coming to his wife and sons "There is no way I will let this little brat play with our children !"
"Oh no, not again,..." Calida rolled her eyes, she had gotten pretty annoyed and bored at Aglowvaine recently.
"Sons", Aglowvaine kneeled to his sons with a smirk, "you see, your aunt and your uncle are losers, their existences are useless, so is their son's, so you better ignore him. I will show you how to humiliate and mock him, as I learnt thought years by myself, daddy became a pro, believe him."
"Oh, well", Calida snarled, "can mommy tell something to daddy ?"
"You can tell me anything, my love." the prince looke up at her with a smile.
"I want a divorce !"
His smile faded all of sudden, an alarmed look appearing on his eyes.
"...What ?" he managed to ask in a small voice.
"I am sick and tired of you ! I think I do still love you, and you are wonderful to me and our sons, but you are the biggest mean jerk I've ever met in all my life to everyone else, even to your own family members who asked for absolutely nothing !"
He got up, absolutely shocked, and took her by her shoulders.
"But but but but but Calida, m-my sweet !..." he stammered "I love you ! You can't do this to me !..."
"I am sorry", she firmly answered with teary eyes however, "but you are a toxic influence to our children, I do not want them to grow like you. This is why I will take them with me, back to my kingdom."
"Oh no, not the children ! Don't take the children away from me, please !..." he begged, with shiny teary eyes.
She left the throne room, not wanting to look at him or she would start to cry, holding Charles' and Sloth's hands. Aglowvaine stood there for minutes, staring at the direction she took, completely lost, before falling on his knees and punching the floor, followed by gross sobs.
One year later
Princess Griddle was happily having a walk in the garden, with Blaze in her arms, who was curiously looking at everything. He had turnt one year old a few days ago, his parents were so relieved to see he survived after all what they went through and the fact he was prematurely laid, and they loved him more than anything. And they were so proud, as he'd been starting to walk for 2 weeks now. A little bit further than them, Griddle noticed her brother who was sitting on a bench, face in his hands. It's been one year Calida had divorced him and that he got to see his sons only one weekend a month, he missed them terribly, and he was heartbroken too. Griddle did miss her friend and her nephews, but seeing Aglowvaine that miserable was a treat worth to live for, even though she felt pity for him at times as she knew how it felt like to miss a child ; but today wasn't one of those times, so she giggled in a mean way.
But Blaze caught her attention with little reptile noises as he pointed at a poppy.
"Oh, what is this flower, Blaze ?" she tenderly him knowing the answer.
"Scree !" he answered.
She picked up the flower and gave him, but took it away from him as he was starting to nom on it.
"No no no, my angel." she explained kissing his cheek "This is not yummy, this is made too look at. This is a poppy. It's pretty isn't it ?"
"P-Pwetty !" he articulated.
Her eyes glowed out of surprise, and she smiled with all her teeth.
"W-What did you say dear ?"
"Pwetty !"
"Aaaw, your first word ! Yes, honey, 'pretty' !" she fangirled, hugging her son "Herman ! Herman !"
She started to look for her husband and found him trimming a tree a bit further.
"Herman !" the wife called again.
"Yes Griddle ?" the husband asked turning to her."
"Blaze said his first word !" she enthusiastically answered, showing the baby "Repeat it for dadsy, my baby."
"Pwetty !" their son repeated proud of himself.
Herman dropped his scissors and bit his lips to prevent himself to fanboy loudly.
"Ooooooooh ! Yes my son ! Yes ! And litterally a pretty word, you're making us so proud !"
He was about to take him in his arms but Griddle stopped him with her hand.
"No no ! He must train and learn how to walk ! Step back, he'll go to you."
"Oh ! Well, you are right." he smiled, stepping back 3 times.
Both kneeled, and the princess put the prince on his little waggling legs, holding him by the waist.
"OK, Blazey. Go to dadsy, you can do it."
"Come on, son !" Said Herman flinging his arms "Come to dadsy !"
Blaze looked unsure, but his parents encouraged him so much he made a little step, legs shaking. He started to toddle in direction of his father as he and his mother were cheering. They encouraged him with a lot of enthusiasm as he kept walking very clumsily. The distance was only 3 meters long, but it was a journey for him. After minutes of hesitant steps and almost tripping, he let himself fall in Herman's hands. His parents cheered more and Griddle clapped her hands.
"Yeeeeee !" they both rejoiced.
"Screeeee !" the baby tried to repeat waggling its tiny tail.
Herman hugged him and Griddle came to them and hugged them both. The old knight nuzzled his son, who, intrigued, hit on his helmet, making it fall on his eyes, making Griddle laugh. Herman chuckled and put it back on its normal position.
"You're making your parents very happy, little man !" Herman happily said as Blaze took one of his fingers "Now, try to say it. 'Daddy !' Come on ! 'Da-ddy' !"
"Oh, Herman." the princess giggled rolling her eyes.
Blaze pouted, concentrating. He finally opened his mouth wide open and a sound came out of it.
"Da !"
"Aw close enough." Herman giggled tenderly.
He gave his son a little kiss on one of his little horns, making him blush and emit happy reptilian purrs, and then he and Griddle kissed.
"Aw, what a cute family." Queen Mum's voice aw'd.
They turnt in surprise and looked up at the queen who had come with discretion despite her huge size, blushing as she saw them kissing. Blaze held his arms up to his grandmother trying to reach her and she gently waved at him with a smile.
"Oh, mumsy !..." Griddle shyly twiddled sleev "He was just taking a speck out of my eye !"
"Aw, honey, always that excuse ?" her mother waved her hand "You used it many times with your exes, but let me remind you you are married to this knight."
"You had exes ?" Herman turnt to his wife with a glare.
"I'm not one of those chatty girls who are proud of the number of losers they dated and dumped." the young wife crossed her arms in sassy way looking away like a diva.
"Anyway, Sir Herman", Queen Mum said taking a serious tone, "I am here for a serious topic, a new quest that is so urgent you need to go now."
"Oh. What kind of quest ?" Herman asked giving his son to the mother.
"A giant, named Dwight, has ravaged a good part of England by now, stomping villages and their inhabitants ! He must be stopped !"
"Your majesty", he said as he bowed, "I will do all my possible."
He still thought to himself he had to know why has he come out of nowhere and what could be the reason, if fight could be avoided. But his thoughts were cut as he noticed Griddle's worried look.
"Oh, don't worry, Griddle" he held her chin wiht a smile "I fought Death many times, see, it's also the reason why Blaze is here now, thanks to my knight duties."
She smiled back "Oh, right, it's just I love you. Be careful, still."
"I love you too." he said as he soflty kissed her lips "I will be, don't worry. Where is he, my queen ?"
"I heard he not far from our coasts, now. Be quick please."
"I will protect us all."
He turnt back to his wife and son, caressing the latter's little head.
"Don't you worry, I will be back before dinner !"
"OK, don't you dare coming late or you'll sleep on the couch." his young wife joked.
"Aw, you're comparing me to Aglowvaine, how insulting." he joked with a smug look.
He took his shield and his sharpest sword, cleaned up his glasses, and started to walk to the back exit of the castle, waving back at his family, Griddle made Blaze's little hand wave.
"Look, sweetheart", she cooed to her baby, "Dasdy is doing the hero again !"
Once arrived to the harbor, Sir Herman took a boat, and rowed to the sea.
He never came back for dinner.
27 years later
Queen Griddle shook her head. She had been lost in her memories, in front of her late first husband's portrait, who never came back from his quest. She touched her cheek and found out tears had run.
"Momsy ?"
She jumped out of surpise and saw Sir Blaze was back. God, she realized after this hit of nostalgia he was as tall as Sir Herman. Especially as she shrunk with age and was even smaller than before.
"Oh, my son, you scared me." she sighed out, putting her hand on her heart.
"Have you cried ?" he asked, worried.
"Oh, no, I mean, apparently, but don't worry for me."
He looked up and saw they were in front of his late father's portrait. He understood.
"You really miss him, do you ?"
She remained silent. She was now Queen of Camelhot and her royal title expected her to remain proud. But... She sighed.
"I do..." she looked down "I may not seem to as I flirt with Sir Loungelot or with any hunk, or as I expect romantic time with your step-father, but this is just because it's in my nature and that I love affection... But my heart will always be his, wherever he is by now."
They both gazed at the portrait.
"I would have loved to know him..." Blaze saddly said "I've always wanted a father, and step-daddy always ignore me... And hearing from all the things you tell me about him, he must have been amazing, wasn't he ?"
"Oh yes he was." she saddly smiled "I loved him so much, and it was reciprocate. And he loved you a lot, dear. You are born of our love, you have no idea how we struggled for your egg to be conceived."
He had a little tear running down his cheek, she noticed and hugged him.
"Aw, Blazey..."
"It's just... I've always tried to look like him... Why do you think I decided to become a knight, adopted the same language tic he had, 'Oh pooh !', and even dressed up in similar clothes ? It's just... Not having known him is the biggest void in my life... I envy Flame who had her father, and who has you as her mother figure..."
"My son..." she held his chin with a reassuring smile "You are very good the way you are, and father or no father, you have me. And look at te bright side : you are a prince in 2 kingdoms, and you have the sister I could never gave you."
He saddly smiled and hugged her back. They remained thi way for minutes.
"However", she broke the silence, "I expect you to find a fiancée soon, without arranged marriages you wouldn't be here !"
"Uuugh, mother !"
