Update: 10/27/18: I have updated the old pic of Dante, with one showing him using his Tornado attack on the city.
Fan art of the Mikene Empire's Spectral Warrior Beast Dante, first introduced in the 1974 OVA Mazinger Z vs the Great Dark General, the remake of the Mazinger Z series finale but prelude the Great Mazinger series.
Dante was once a Human who resided on the island of Bardos a millennia ago, which becomes the Base for Dr. Hell in the present timeline during his war with Mazinger Z and the Photon Power Lad Institute. When the forces of the Great General of Darkness attack the original Mikene Civilization, Dante was among those captured and was converted into a 13 meter tall Cyborg, with his human face located on the mouth of the robot where his human brain was incorporated into - his weapons were a Halo, capable to cut anything and a Tornado attack that came out from under the robe. He was part of the Mikene's Spectral/Ghost Army (and my personal favorite of the Monsters from these OVA's lol).
Dante was among the group of Mikene Warrior Beasts ordered by Archduke Gorgon to attack Tokyo, with Birdian, Raigon, Mammothdon, Slava and Jarada - this marks the first time a team of Mechanical Monsters is sent, up till then it was one monster per city (likely Gorgon foreseen the inevitable encounter with Mazinger wanted to go in full force). When they arrive on Tokyo, they stumble upon Mazinger Z, already deployed after the news of the string of Giant Monsters attacks around the world reached Japan. Dante and his team lay waste on the city, while Slava, the Aquatic Monster, dealt with Mazinger at the bottom of Tokyo Bay. After that, Gorgon ordered Dante and Mammothdon to destroy the Photon Power lab, and Dante personally destroyed Diana A, while Mammothdon impale Borot.
After having achieve their job and return to the Empire, Dante is told of the fate that had befallen on Birdian, Slava, Raigon and Jarada - having all fallen to Mazinger Z. When the Great General of Darkness commissions General Juuma the mission to destroy Mazinger, Dante and Mammothdon join him with seven other Warrior Beasts for the revenge squad. When Koji deploys Mazinger (still in need of repair) he kills Mammothdon and takes off, but Dante rapidly uses his Halo to cut the wing on Mazinger, crashing into a gorge, where Juuma springs his trap, and rapidly they proceed to attack Mazinger, reducing him to walking wreck. Dante then attempts to destroy Mazinger Z, but is saved when Boss Borot, having been launched on Diana A's Rockets, kamikazes on Dante's human face, destroying him: becoming the last Warrior Beast to be destroy before Great Mazinger arrives.
Dante was brought back in the 2000's OVA Mazinkaiser vs The Great General of Darkness Deathmatch, the remake of the 1974 OVA Go Nagai always intended, with Koji been the hero of the story (looking much like his original 1974 counterpart, but slicker) - while The Mikene Generals lay waste on the world, and destroy the Mazinger Army one by one, Dante led a surprise attack on the Photon Power lab, leading a sizeable force of Warrior Beasts, in order to find and destroy Mazinkaiser. When Koji arrives on the ruins of the lab on the Boss Borot, Dante descends from the clouds, having waited for Koji, who up till then had escaped with Sayaka from many failed Mikene encounters on his way back to Japan, at the sacrifice of his friends on the way, and then the rest of the Warrior Beast rapidly spring out of hiding.
Dante was briefly held by Borot, while Koji searched for Kaiser on the pilder, only to learn from Dr. Yumi via radio it was sent to a secret Photon Lad orbiting Earth - Kaiser is launched from orbit, the Kaiser Pilder connect and Mazinkaiser goes Motherfucker on their asses. Dante been the last one to be destroyed with the Optic Beam attack before Koji killed the surviving Generals.
Trivia...
Like many of the members of the Spectral Faction of the Mikene Army, Dante can't be physically hurt, as any attack just passes right through him - but when Borot was launched on Diana A's Rockets, he hit him straight in the Human Face, located on the mouth of the robot: Mazinger and Diana A fired their main beams to him to no effect. Thought this was contradicted in Mazinkaiser vs the Great General of Darkness, where Kaiser's Optic Beam burned him out of existence.
Of all the Mikene in the 1974 version, Dante is view as a secondary antagonist, having the most interactions with Mazinger than his fellow Mikene, as well he showed he was sadistic, only after General Juuma, the Great General and fellow member Birdian, but by far the most arrogant - in his first encounter with Mazinger, Koji boasts of Mazinger was ready to defend Tokyo, Dante rapidly responds to his boast with an arrogant chuckle, and during the siege on the Photon Lab, he laughed as he destroyed the Energy Barrier with his Tornado attack, confidant that it wouldn't be of any impediment to the Beast Warrior attacks. Despite this, he seems to show a certain level of comradeship: during the final fight, and with Mammothdon having already been killed by Mazinger, Dante asked General Juuma personal permission to kill Mazinger to avenge all of his fallen fellow Team mates, when Juuma grants it, Dante turns around to look at Mazinger with an evil smile on his face. As such, Dante could have been a high ranking officer in the Mikene Army, which is shown by the fact he is either ahead on the group, or is the first to attack.
This seems to shown in the 2000 OVA remake - before the surviving Generals gather in Japan, Dante was was already on the Photon Power Lab with a team of Warrior Beasts, searching in vane for Mazinkaiser, when Koji arrives on the Borot, Dante comes out of hiding first and then his fellow Warrior Beasts, and when they proceed to open fire on the Borot they do so on Dante's command.
This is likely to compensate for the lack of other Major antagonists, Like Prime Minister Argos, Marquis Janus and The Emperor of Darkness, neither of whom appear in the 1974 and 2000's OVA versions, nor so the Seven other Generals, been replaced by the precess of Juuma in the 1974 OVA (though the Seven Generals return in the 2000's version but Juuma is not present).
