Creature Concept: Dramatic Bipedal Gliding Bear-Open Species
The Dramatic Bipedal Gliding Bear also known as D.B.G.B and nicknamed Dug Bears by some locals are a species of bear located within areas of dense forestation and elevated landscape, often found in mountain forests. The bears are known to be semi sentient with above ape level intelligence however an in-depth investigation into the intellectual potential as until recently it was assumed they were hostile to all species outside their own, later discovered that there was an exception as the bears are friendlier to the opposite of their gender, though this information have provided slightly temperamental results.
Both species of bear tend to be brown in colour with both genders boasting a more humanoid like figure, both with a slimmer figure with shifted breasts and even faint thumbs. The bears other notable trait is the large flap of skin similar to a flying squirrel that links their wrists to their hips, providing them with a cape like skin flap, semi allowing them to both glide and parachute to varied results, commonly the females being the only ones capable.
The species diverge vastly when gender is concerned, the females often far more plane in appearance unless a hormonal imbalance occurs leading to them taking on male traits, the reverse also possible. The females often have saggier under arm flaps and a lighter weight which is more than likely why they are more commonly sighted briefly taking flight. The females take up a mostly lethargic life style with a clear drive to get one, often seeking out for a male to care for them. It seems the females desire a sense of security based on their environment which greatly effects the mates they desire for, a clearly noted indication as to why the males are highly mating habit focused.
The males are the peacocks of the bear world, their habits almost unanimously fixated on breeding females. Their upper bodies are broad like a muscular human with a hair that becomes shaggy very quickly and a thicker mound of hair upon their chest. Often the D.B.G.B fur colour changes based on their eating habits leading to one stand of fur being both black, brown, or even white in separate sections.
D.B.G.B males display a highly adaptive body, changing many of their features to try appease the females based on certain deemed requirements. If the terrain proves rough D.B.G.B will often partake in exercise and weight lifting like activities to help encourage muscles; if the season is cold often the D.B.G.B will try grow fat and pudgy, showing they are able to collect lots of food and have lots of heat; practicing breath holding for louder roars is noted when human activity is present, likely a reaction to try ward off predators they are aware it is best to scare away. Male D.B.G.B possess an elongated index and thumb claw in which they use like scissors to trim their fur into more fanciful designs as an attempt to impress.
When the males deem themselves suitable they will begin to find females who often lay around in groups. Once found the male often finding itself with another group of males will begin to pose, flex, and display themselves to the females, this courtship often taking up to an hour or two depending on how the range of males present. The males will try bend, flap, and hold their gliding flaps, using them like a cape to exaggerate their motions leaving their posing to almost come across like seductive dancing for human viewers though clearly a courtship to the females and high estrogen males who will also dwell in the female groups.
The bears are normally monogamous however polygamy is common when one male or female proves too desirable, however this monogamy and polygamy will only last up to a year until mating ritual habits urge the males and females to mate with the next highest quality mate they can get their hands on.
It should be noted that while both genders of D.B.G.B can fly the males have often found that when they have gained weight and muscle which fades quickly after their mating ritual ends, they will forget that they have gained weight during that period of time. What this means if they often forget they are too heavy to glide and or fly, leading to some mountain travellers to find themselves attacked by a bear raining from the sky, a simple D.B.G.B leaping of a tree of cliff edge only to land on a tourist to which they are rarely pleased about.
