Take a look at a Roman sica and tell me what in the hell it is for. Leverage? Reach? Just to add spice to the match, cause they were not used in warfare. https://www.reliks.com/products/5179/1200x0/2.jpg And African ironwork is stunning.
As far as I know they used it in gladiator fights, and it makes sense since a blade like that is better at cutting than stabbing (and gladiators always tried to avoid stabs since they were more deadly), not to mention it can be useful to strike over or around a shield. That said, the sica originated in the Balkan area, I think, and it reminds a lot of a kukri or falx, quite different from the roman versions.
