So while I was doing some yard work at my neighbor's place today, I stumbled upon this beauty poking out of the ground. Which is a surprise to me because: 1.) This is the first time I've seen this big of a stag beetle in 6 years. 2.) Stag beetles usually do not emerge from the ground until late May or early June.
I will be releasing her tomorrow, though I need to find a good place, as my backyard is swarmed by birds who'd love to grab her as a snack food.

texas is notorious for finding these cuties in rotting wood since its damp dark and cool to be in so they can avoid the sun. remember texas has some of the hottest temperatures in the summer so they like to hide in damp dark places. i once found them in a 4x4 cut pressed wood in my yard last year pulled 35 of them out of the 4v4 cause it was nice and cold under it.
