Followup to: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/815400 , a piece of art by Anaktis.
With a bit of AU Atiel from my comic helping out.

Night had fallen when Ayana heard the rattle of a wagon and the heavy clop of hooves, the sounds progressing slowly down Freedom Alley. Murmurs rose around her as the other slaves on the road took notice, and she gritted her teeth against the pain, bringing her wrists back up in front of her face as the wagon neared. Anything was probably better than spending the night out here.
Then, voices. A man's voice, age unknown, in a language she didn't recognize. A young girl replying in the same, her voice more local, the tone respectful, as the voices came closer. The footsteps came closer, and she cringed back as a male scent loomed over her, a scent laced with something like sharp, bitter flowers. Then a hand gently settled on the top of hers, and pushed her hands down so she wasn't holding up her wrists.
"Take her to the wagon. Get a blanket around her."
The young girl had helped her to and into the wagon, followed by a few others on the road in no condition to see fair treatment. A man near her age who'd recently lost a hand while working, a pair of young mice barely in their teens, badly beaten, infection and fever wracking them to the point they had to be carried to the wagon. Then the wagon was rolling out, leaving the city, and Ayana still had little clue who had just picked her up from Freedom Alley.
It turned out he was a well off scholar who lived outside of town in a very large farmhouse. He talked while he drove the wagon, his voice one of studied disinterest around the thick accent. He was taking them in and would get them well. Once well, he would not hold them to the house, though if they stayed, he expected them to pitch in. He didn't believe in slavery, so they would see no aggression from him. After the first day, he would give no orders.
His first order of the first day: everyone gets properly clean.
Happily, the young girl had been willing to help out with that.
