After all this time I finally colored this one.
He is a hero centurion from a fantasy like Byzantine empire during the Renaissance era. My intention is an anime like fantasy.
Being a fantasy picture where the character is a centurion with earth based powers I had his armor be made out of minerals and ore of high quality.
His cloak is made from sapphire for the blue of the region he protects which is a seafaring area. His main armor is made of diamonds for good resistance to blows. The ores include silver, gold and a good deal of platinum.
It is not for show but for combat use. How cool, aye. LOL. ^\/^.

First off, the Byzantine Empire was the last remnants of the Roman empire while it was split between the west and east sides. While the west one fell to the barbarians the western one prevailed until the Turks conquered it centuries later.
Secondly the banners during the time were puny looking as the kind used these days and since this guy is a fantasy period type character then it fits. Lastly what do you know of fighting styles?
All you really know, besides necromancy and sorcery, are pecking beaks and a flock of birds.
Please think before speaking, aye. (sarcastic face with face palm) -\/-.

You're lecturing on the basics, dear Duphas. High schoolers know about the fracturing of the empire and the conditions behind it. Do you know what else high schoolers learn? That Byzantium was a greek city! Sure it had been latinized, at the early part of the empire but after the early 7th century the official language was greek. Even during the time of two empires there was a minor linguistic and cultural barrier. SPQR was the motto of the Roman legion and the city of Rome based during the time of the Roman Republic. It should be obvious, really: Senatus Populusque Romanus, the Senate and People of Rome, the motto of the Roman Republic. After the fall of the Republic the motto was basically only used on legion banners and fell out of use altogether soon after.
Do you by chance know of the notitia dignitatum? Does your wikipedia knowledge cover it? You'd better hurry and do a wiki search on it if it doesn't. It's the official document recovered about the byzantine military structure. It makes interesting references to the fact that Byzantine legions only used legion numbers and the eagle insignia despite preserving the format of the old western roman legions even before the reform.
What do I know of fighting styles? Certainly enough to know that our poor mixed up soldier would be able to stand with that toothpick thigh of his, let alone do any effective fighting. As for the banners, I know that the empire's banners were small. But that's like smaller than his head. It would probably be more appropriate as a napkin.

They also use western saints as well. In addition the city that was the capital of the new Rome was none existent until the new Christian emperor made it. Also the Romans used a good portion of Greek and many other ideas from all parts of the known world at the time. The Persians did the same thing and is one reason for their rapid rise to power. And speaking of the wikipedia, which you have likely went to yourself to get the translation and is not even close to a viably trusted source of information due to many inaccuracies and the ability to edit the pages, I did not go to to learn of this. I went to college for a reason. By the way, S.P.Q.R. stands for Senatus Populusque Quintas Romanus dumbass. Know your Latin and history. LOL. ^\/^.
oh....dude, que means 'and' in latin
....and Qutintas is a feminization of quintus, which means 'fifth' in latin
but that's okay, it's fine to admit you're wrong, everybody makes mistakes
...though not everybody makes college educated mistakes
but oh well, you only wasted thousands of dollars learning things wrong
no big deal really

I said 'Quintas' not 'Quintus' or 'Qutintas'. Big difference. Together, in the phrase, it means 'Senate And People Of Rome' or 'Senate And People From Rome'. The 'Quintas' part means 'From' or 'Of' in differing circumstances dependent on how it is used in the sentence in Latin. Please pay attention. LOL. ^\/^.
Populusque is a compound word so it stands for both letters. I know it sounds lame, but they broke the word into two for the acronym to make it sound better. SPR just doesn't have the same ring to it, I guess. It's funny how the pioneers of the acronym cheated just as badly with it as modern people do.
