Yup, he is amazed and awed at the feel of the little life that he feels moving in her. in the main part of the story he he knew she was pregnant but being, at the most, 16 week "on" it barely showed and, of course, things were too early for there to be any movements to be felt. He is amazed at the "feel" and that she let him do it.
