Lyndon Brennan is the foremost Ashurian expert on their neighbors the Talwyn. He has studied them and their culture for years. His area of research was often ignored by his fellow scientists and deemed unimportant, much to his frustration.
He worked out of a small building in the Ashurian capital publishing papers in any outlet that would accept his work though few seemed to draw attention.
Everything changed the day Arandis Scott came to visit him and made him an offer. Since then he has served as Chief Researcher directly under her.
Personal Statement
"My name is Lyndon Brennan. While I am technically an Ashurian I've always thought of myself first and foremost as a scientist. My duty is to knowledge and the expansion of our understanding of the universe. This does not mean I have no loyalty to my homeland, but simply that understanding is more important than any political agenda. While most of my fellows preferred to ignore the Talwyn I found them fascinating beyond measure. Ashurians and the Talwyn nation generally did not interact but I still found ways to meet with members of their country and speak to their citizens. I learned what I could and published papers to little acclaim.
It was when I had almost given up on ever accomplishing anything with the uninterested academic community when I was approached by Arandis Scott of Vantage International. She had told me she'd followed my work and found my ideas rather fascinating. She offered me my own lab and a budget larger than I'd ever seen. Of course I said yes. It came with strings, as such things always do. I had to work for her and research avenues the government deemed relevant, seeing as the energy crisis had suddenly made knowledge of the Talwyn a valuable commodity. Most of those happened to be the usual things, like weapons and such.
Any time not consumed by that work was mine to do with as I wished. I spent as much of it as I could trying to understand them, and the more I learned the less I understood why Senator Lynch despised them so. He had me researching ways to integrate their technology with ours and asked me to design some truly terrible things. I pray they never come to being needed.
Though I find myself uncertain whether my decision to come here was the correct one, I find Arandis and myself have a bit of a repoir. She is a well learned individual who finds the idea of war as distasteful as I do, yet we are subject to the wishes of our government until the political landscape changes..."

I've always rather liked Lyndon. I wasn't exactly sure what to make of him at first, since my initial introduction to him was, as I recall, through the eyes of Talwyn soldiers, and the fact that he was essentially stealing their technology to study struck me as kind of an iffy thing to do, considering how much potential those crystals have for unchecked destruction in the wrong hands, or if handled incorrectly. But the more I got to know him, the more he struck me as one of the few prominent Ashurians who actually had their heads screwed on straight and could see the conflict, and the Talwyn, on a more objective level not clouded by politics. He still strikes me as someone who has the potential to be incredibly dangerous, especially if any of the terrible devices he mentioned are put into use, but I can't help but think that he's a pretty decent person and someone who would make a pretty good ally and friend to his own people. And maybe to the Talwyn, once all the dust has settled.
Fun fact, Lyndon was the first elephant character I ever created, and I just liked elephants a lot because of him. He was always intended to be one of the older and more intellectual characters out of the bunch, though his story has shifted here and there but oddly enough ended up coming back full circle to an original plan I had for him when I had first designed the current shape of Lauren's world. You'll find out more about that later.
While at first Kathris thinks he'll be little more than a burden he soon warms to the elephant and in time considers him a friend.
Lyndon as he says above is not subject to politics on a personal level, he wants to learn and perhaps is discovering how knowledge can be corrupted more than he would like, but the Ashurians are my way of saying just because someone is on the other side doesn't mean they're the enemy by default. ;)
Knowledge can be dangerous or incredibly beneficial. It all depends on how it is used.

Based on what I've read so far, I think Lyndon was perhaps your first or at least your best piece of evidence that the Ashurians, as a whole, aren't that much different from the Talwyn. They might be the enemy of the Talwyn and there might well be some ambitious or cruel people among their ranks, but no more so than you'd find in any society. In a way it makes the war feel more frustrating and unnecessary, at least from the point of view of the reader, since it seems like the two nations could be close allies if only they'd talk to each other. And in the meantime, you have decent people like Lyndon caught in the middle of it all. That said, it really is a strength of your world, I think, since black and white, good and evil can be so very boring. And when you focus on stories from the Ashurian point of view, it's nice to have characters that the reader can sympathize with an relate to as well.
I certainly don't blame you for being so fond of him. He's a really well written character and while he might not be as action oriented as some characters, he feels like someone who can bring a lot to any story he's in and to the world as a whole. I think I'm just repeating myself at this point, but he's one of my favorites of your characters, too.

It was definitely my attempt to try and convey that for two purposes. One, to keep the audience with an open mind and the fact that antagonist is not always synonymous with bad guy. All the word means is someone who opposes the protagonist. A lot of the times we don't get to see the other side or enough to realize they aren't just being giant jerks, they have a reason for what they do and it's as important to them as our reasons are to us. Of course, we know neither side has all the facts, but in that way it's similar to real life. I'd like to hope that when reading folks keep asking questions since I try to plant clues or seeds in as I go for what might turn out to be true later on.
I've never been a fan of black and white divisions. I believe people are people, and it is their character and not any other factor that determines who they are. Whether you are from this nation or that, male or female, regardless of race, religion, etc... You determine how you represent that group. I particularly enjoy the stories written from the Ashurian side since you get to see how different and yet similar each side is as well as it allows me to do things I can't do with the other side. ;)
He's always been a versatile character who fits a niche I find I couldn't do without, not to mention there are not enough elephant characters in the fandom. Sometimes the most important character is the one who'll stop and ask questions rather than go in shooting. :)
