Yeah, I have a drawing tablet, the key to smooth lines is ironically not going slow -it's moving quick! It takes a lot of practice, but it really does work out really nicely once you get decent at it ^.^
From my experience (which is limited) with tablets, as I've only had mine 1 year (almost to date), I've seen them priced at anywhere from around $60 for a small one, to $400 for a large one (what I bought). They only go up from there, but they're rediculously professional grade and such. If you're looking for a simple, good, and responsive tablet - I'd look up Intuos Pro (or just Wacom tablets in general) - they're amazing (it's what I have). Wacom makes great tablets in general, but I can personally vouch for the Intuos Pros!
