1- Original pencil line art. Scanned in photoshop.
2- Cleaned up pencil line art.
3-Linear burn layer at 100% for color.
4-Multiply layer at 60% for shading. Used a grayish blue for shadow color.
5-Another Multiply layer at 60% for darker shading. Used same color as before for shadow color
6-Overlay layer at 35% for highlights. Used white with a hint of yellow for color.
7-Another overlay layer at 60% for brighter highlights. Used pure white for color.
8-Normal layer at 100% for small shiny highlights. Used pure white.
9-Multiply layer at 100% for background. Blurred to add depth.
10-Flatten Image. Add signature. Adjusted color balance for more reds and yellows.

Yeah, it's what I do. A quick fix. And it avoids having to play with colour modes, which tends to frustrate me.
How old is the scanner? That could account for the blur. I scan at 600dpi then scale down, but I wouldn't recommend going THAT high. 300 may be best. And it gives you a nice, big scan to play with along with capturing more detail.

Ah geez, all-in-ones. Well, even though you can't get one, if you ever save about $100, then I highly recommend a Canon flatbed. My CanoScan LIDE 70 is pretty much the greatest birthday present I've ever gotten.
Its lid adjusts for sketchbooks, and I've never gotten yellow in any of my scans yet.
All-in-ones are a dumb idea, because if one part breaks, then you lose every other perfectly good part. A waste, in my humble opinion.

Amazing, you use a very similar method to me but that much more controlled and cleaner. One of the things I've loved most about your artwork is your bold graphical style, especially when it comes to the softer hints and hues for highlights and depth. Heh, I envy you a bit.
Regardless, keep up the great production quality, good sir. The pros make it look so easy, which I consider you one to be. OK, I'll be quiet now. ^^;
