Endless Realms bestiary - Mengshi
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Some more dream realm creatures as requested by my art director, who gave me free reign to come up with some additional concepts - I really like this one (probably my favourite of this bunch). I think he could possibly pass for a creature from the spirit realm or even a fay, but I intended him as another possible agent for the Sandman. Obviously based on foo dogs/Imperial lions, mengshi serve as guardians of the dream realm with illusory and dream-walking capabilities, allowing them to travel rapidly across the corporeal realm through the minds of dreamers as needs may take them. A bit more "orderly" for the chaotic nature of the dream realm, but I think it would make sense for the gods of the universe to want -something- around to help keep its entropy in check.

Bam I got an idea. If you have a shrine keeper or something of the short, they could be talking to the spirits when this creature arrives. Standing there silent looking into the shrine keepers eyes. Making them think it's a spirit before it vanishes into nothing. Keeping watch of the keeper when the party has to come visit him. Since the keeper hadn't been seen for a few weeks. Only to find the place in shambles and covered with spiders on the outside and crawlers attaches to the walls toward the inside. The shrine keeper being knocked out by an artifact that turnes his spiritual energy into a poison. Knocking him out and making him a conduit to the dream realm. Which the Mengshi wants to close.
