After a couple days of trying the padding on in various ways, I finally got it figured out! Turns out I had the padding in backwards.
I was originally placing the padding in starting at the front and wrapping down and around the back of the leg, but I found out that it looks a lot better when the padding starts at my butt and wraps down around to the front of my leg. You can see the layout in this image.
