Endless Realms bestiary - Elephant Grub
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Now for something completely different! This came about actually because I'm working on another ER cover illustration where the art director requested a party of adventurers fighting a giant caterpillar (sounds weird, but it makes sense in context :b), then realised there should probably be a bestiary entry to go with it!
So here we have the tentatively named elephant grub, a large voracious herbivore that can only be sustained by places like the vast, bountiful fields native to Skidi glider lands. The Skidi, however, are fiercely protective of their beloved flower fields and lush crops, and regularly work together to keep the elephant grubs from dealing too much damage to their fields.

Would they have any natural predators such as A form of Parasitic wasp? Or even just a fungal infection of sorts?
I imagine only a small number of the Elephant grub population manage to reach that size over their lifespan... How long does it take for them to go from an Egg to 'Adult' larval state?
Also... Grub implies the larval stage of a beetle... Which usually resides underground :P

Oh, probably. Like a lot of animals, I'm sure they get picked off quite readily while they're young, and just a few live long enough in an abundant enough area to get this big, as you say. Once they get this big, though? Probably only big enough monsters like cyclops and giants... and also bands of Skidi, hehe.
As for the details of their actual lifespan, no clue :b I'm usually not responsible for coming up with serious details of lore - they just sometimes need me to come up with ideas, and throw them at them, and then they figure out what makes the final cut, as it were.
Right, forgot about that - I mean, I know they're larval/neotonic as opposed to adult in form, but forgot grubs are specific to beetles. Doesn't really matter, though, whether they're supposed to be from a beetle species or a butterfly/moth species - the art director wasn't sure if she wanted them to be partially subterranean anyway, so still works out, haha.

I can only imagine these massive Grubs bursting from the earth after several years slumber to once again feast upon a bounty of plants....
Could make a nice side-quest for some farmers as a field they thought was safe actually had one of those monstrosities burst from the ground and begin to devour the year's crop...
"MY CABBAGES!"

Speaking of which, did you know barnacles have the largest penis:body ratio of all animals? :V
((It's 'cause they're sedentary. To prevent excessive breeding with the same immediate neighbours, they evolved super-long tentacle penises so they can "go abroad" and mix their genes up with more barnacles elsewhere :b The things you learn in university...))

Now why would I look at a Barnacle's junk?!?!?! Gaak XD XD
Okay obscure facts. Hmmm... Helena Bonham Carter insisted that her make up artist, apply her make up for her character, Maria, in "The Fight Club" with her left hand, because Carter thought the character was not the type that was ever precise with their make up.
For all of their ferocity, in Mongol Asia, it was safe enough for a woman to travel with a bag of gold from end to end, and get to her destination end to end.
The most successful British Infantry rifle was patented by an American. (James Parris Lee).
The Batcave from the 60's show was actually a disused quarry near the Hollywood sign.
