For my first "Throwback Thursday" of March, 2017, I thought I'd share this very recent 'photo-op' of yours truly, taken at Bobby Rubino's Rib House in Pompano Beach, Florida...
When I used to live with my family (Mom, Dad, my sister Rhonda, and my brother Glenn) from the mid-1960s to the early 1990s, there used to be two Bobby Rubino's on Long Island: one in Baldwin, and one in Huntington. And whether we go there as a family or I dine all by myself, I'm guaranteed a very good meal there...
Then, when I'd moved down to Florida (in 1994), I'd found a few more Bobby Rubino's all over Broward County (in cities like Pompano Beach, Lauderhill, and North Lauderdale). But over the course of time, things began to change...
The Lauderhill restaurant closes down; the North Lauderdale eatery relocates to Margate (right across the street from my condo complex)... but only for a few months, before it goes out of business. I'd learn, later on, that the Bobby Rubino's back on Long Island had also folded.
Finally, all that was left was the flagship restaurant in Pompano Beach. But it managed to stay alive for its loyal customers. My mother would take me there for my birthday (until her passing in the 2000s), or I would take a friend there (when I still had a car and a decent job). I would savor a rack of their barbecue ribs, their onion loaf appetizer, and a side order of baked beans - whether I was celebrating my birthday or having a social moment.
That said, we now 'flash forward' to March 1, 2017, when my brother Glenn decides to treat me out to dinner at Bobby Rubino's for my 63rd birthday. He got to wear his red Lewis Black concert T-shirt (which I'd bought for him back in January, when we saw the comedian perform in Coral Springs), and I wore my blue "Zootopia" tee (with 'Nick Wilde' and the phrase "The FOX has arrived!" on it).
We arrived (in my brother's black Mini-Cooper) before sunset, as I was waxing nostalgic about all of the other rib houses in the chain, with the Pompano Beach eatery being the last one on Earth (let alone in the USA). Inspired, I got Glenn to use the digital camera feature of his smartphone to snap a picture of me in front of the building on Federal Highway (a.k.a. US1).
(The rest of my birthday visit can be found in my journal "A Little Of This And A Little Of That" #1 - https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/8108215/ - in the segment "How I Celebrated My 63rd Birthday".)
If you ever visit south Florida, I'd highly recommend visiting Bobby Rubino's Rib House.
