I've messed with HDR but I've rarely found I need it. Many of my dark pictures are dark because they scene they were presented with was dark as well. As a rule I let the exposure dictate the final image. Since my RAW images already have a bit depth of 12 there's a huge amount of dynamic range that can be pulled out with Aperture if needed.
