I use a plugin called "Ornatrix" in 3dsMax to create the fur geometry and VRay to render it.
The fur is generated procedurally driven by some b/w maps. On this character there are 16 different fur systems.
Took me about 6 month of R&D to make it look this way.
Blender is capable of some fairly realistic fur as far as I recall, but I've never used it. :/
Also sorry for answering in English, it's just so unusual to use German, especially if it's related to CGI.

Blender fur ist not that hard to realize. There are few really good tutorials on youtube for that. :) Oh, before i forgot. I know, my post was in german, but it's okay to anwser in english. I thought you're german too, that was logical for me to write in german. I hope my english is understandable, because in young years i had no interrest for english, and now i could kick my own ass for that. ;)
