A week-and-a-half back I did a character concept for Ellie Nott (http://68.media.tumblr.com/6675a9441310b8081307953c7f607f49/tumblr_ol4hk8n3eG1umvbxho1_1280.jpg), the protagonist in a Beyond the Pale short story, alongside the monster from that same story, and decided to make a painting of her whenever I got the chance. So I did.

This taught me two important lessons: 1) I have confidence in my work process for paintings as well, and am no longer fearful of merging layers more frequently; and 2) I got to stop giving the background so much attention at the start, 'cause I always end up flooding it with details that will eventually be messed with through effects and shit.
