Basilisk is of Polynesian origin, and gained his appearance and abilities through non traditional means. Simply put, he wasn't born a lizard-like monster.
Abilities include: eye of truth, the ability to run on water for short distances (courtesy of the basilisk lizard that contributes to his form), and the ability to rapid heal, but only in his beast form.
