When you live thousands of years. For Aria, Demeter is....more than a lover and Father of her children. He is her constant, her unchangeable value. He is goofy, and silly, and doesn't know the difference between Isomers and polymers. He is loving, and comforting, and romantic, and holds her in just the right way to make her forget about her research and studies, and just enjoy being with HIM, even if only for a little while.
For Demeter, Aria is his light. His little bookworm that has hidden depths and talks about things he doesn't always understand; but when she does she speaks with such passion and excitement that he can't help but share her joy. The highlight of his day is to see that smile, and he'd do anything to make sure she is never sad.
They knew each other before they had even developed into their genders, and thought they'd spin the rest of eternity with one another......
When they found out Demeter was on his last century of life, they could not have been more devastated. Aria insisted on him going to live in another, time slowed, pocket dimension. Perhaps that was selfish of her, locking him away from the rest of the world just so that she'd never have to live with the thought of not being able to have him when she needed him, but she didn't CARE!
For a while, Demeter went along with the idea, anything to make her happy......but while she is the light of his life, she is not the only one. His friends....his family.....having them look like they had half forgotten how he looked every visit HURT. Not being a significant part in his Grandson's life HURT. But, most of all, not sharing those moments with Aria when she'd make some new discovery or create some new form of life, hearing about them in bursts between her visits HURT.
They talked it out. There were many tears shed, voices raised, and harsh words spoken, but Aria knew what she wanted wasn't fair. It wasn't right for her love. So they decided not to dwell on the future, and to make the rest of the time they had MATTER.
I know, a lot of exposition and sappy stuff, but it felt like there'd never be a more appropriate day then Valentines to air this out. Kudos if you managed to read the entire thing and not gag on the sap.

Just the way the My eastern dragons work. They can live anywhere between three to ten thousand years and not age physically past their thirties, but once they reach the the end of their time, they start to age over the course of a century. Demeter here is about ten years into it, and it'll likely take another fifty before he starts to really look old, but that is but a blink of an eye for someone who numbers their years in the thousands.
