Importing Expectations.
It’s not that anime is all the same - it’s that the American audience only takes interest in a tiny unimaginative silver of it. Which could be said of television and movies in general in America.

I daresay not just in America, either. It's not surprising. Companies want stuff that's guaranteed to sell to justify the expense of importing it. Once they've found a tried-and-true formula, they stick with it until it's sucked dry because expanding their import range risks losing money and ignominiously going out of business when it fails.
All I can remember that was out by then was StarBlazers, Battle of the Planets, Speed Racer, Marine Boy, and Kimba, the white lion. Never watched that whole Superbook series, which I still don't know to this day if it counts as anime. ((Never-mind Wikipedia tells me that it didn't air until late 81 so it doesn't exist in this canon yet.)) Either way in any of those I don't remember a shower scene.
But honestly what cartoon couldn't be improved by more exploding cities?
