Cutting open that central part of the pattern worked fine though, lined the edges with bias tape and we're good to go.

For the hyena, who has a perky erect tail, I needed to add a slit in the back so it wouldn't 'tent' over it...the as-yet-unbuilt lion tail will be lower so I may not have to. We'll see!
