Actually Bell, they didn't outlaw tea. However, import taxes were raised to a ridiculous amount which caused a revolt which led to large shipments of tea being dumped into a harbor. (Travesty, I know)
This (and a desire to seperate ourselves from the way Britain did things) did lead to a shortage on tea for awhile in the US tho, and I believe this did indeed contribute to the creation/rise in coffees popularity.
