I remember helping unload groceries from the car after my mom and brother went to the store and seeing a large bag of bird seed. Being the twisted person that I am, I thanked my mom for buying the cat food bait. It took her a minute, and then she smacked me on the arm and laughed.
Our bird feeders are on the back porch, and the cat will sit on the railing and wait for any possible snacks. He does a good job of getting the dumber ones let me tell you. Now if we could only get him to eat mice with such enthusiasm. In his defense though he does hunt them, but he tends to put them in shoes as a sign of affection. Slippers, mouse, early morning, and bare feet: not a good combination.

Intelligent kitty, nobody can blame him for human beings opening a feast for him. I kept birds, rats, mice and cats in one household. My sister did so, too, and she had a kitty, the mother of my male cat, who used to be called "killer cat" for good reason. She knew well how to sneak into the room unseen, and feast on the inhabitants of the cages she could reach. A reason why she knew well how hamster or mus minutoides tasted. My male cat has the same intelligence, but since I don't have children he never got any of my pets, though he still catches all wild mice he can get hold of. Nobody would ever consider him being one of the best mice-catching cats I've ever heard of since he's a cute fluffball of a Holy Birman, and _looks_ very slow and snug.
Pet your kitty and give him some extra treats for being so smart :)
