A photograph (courtesy of my friend "Albatross") taken on 3 May 2009 at the 35th Annual May Day Parade, sponsored by the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater in Minneapolis. The large puppet is "Sabo-Cat", mascot of the Industrial Workers of the World union (IWW, a/k/a the "Wobblies"). And just who is that sinister figure operating the cat's left paw...?

It's always the ones you never suspect, isn't it?
I also helped build Sabo. Members of the local IWW spent the last month or so working on the puppet at workshops held by the HotB Theater on Lake Street. It was quite an experience. And, I thought the cat turned out pretty well for a bunch of first-time puppet designers/builders (perhaps we tapped into the constructive powers of our working-class "Wobbly" ancestors). Naturally, I was very impressed with the work of the more experienced puppeteers, especially the House of Cards, which was an amazing feat of peoples' engineering.

Nice puppet! All that hard work paid off. Will the puppet ever be used again?
Also, Someday, I hope someone makes a puppet of Donald Rooum's Wildcat character ( http://takver.com/me/wildcat.htm ).
