In iva's case her vehicle's body is based off an early model staff-car known for it's handeling and ruggedness. The engine is powered by an atomic generator. once it gets up to speed it has far more power than a combustion engine. The weight just means it's slow to accelerate.
But that's what the various gadgets like rocket boosters, tesla blasters, and robotnization beam is for.
