Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon - Friends Forever
Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon was a game that touched me hard. Really hard. Like... I ended up playing it all the way through the main story three times in about 2 months back to back.
Each time, my partner I chose to be a Fennekin named Foxcraft (named after a children's book series under the same name) and on my first and third playthrough I played as a Riolu (named Eclipsis for the sake of being me). I fully believe the game would not have touched me as much as it did had my partner been anything but a Fennekin. The species complimented the scripted personality very well. And of course, he was a Fennekin. This picture was done around the time of my three playthroughs to preserve my emotional attachment I had to the game. Close friends know how emotionally disturbed I was at the end of the game, especially the first playthrough.
At this time, I've come to rank Super Mystery Dungeon as my third favorite game I ever played, behind only Kingdom Hearts II (2) and Starcraft II (1). But never had I played a game that prompted me to play through it three times in a row. The only thing that came close to that was Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm which I played through twice. Had it not been for the Fennekin attachment, I suspect Explorers of Sky would have still outranked SMD as my favorite. In a sense, it was a tie breaker. Both have very vivid plots.
The game was very fun and very challenging despite me being a veteran of the Mystery Dungeon games from the beginning. I did play through it without a game over but many times the game beat me to an inch of my life, especially the true final boss (in terms of game mechanics), the 8th icon Pokemon on your save file. That boss fight was probably the most memorable fight in all my MD gameplay.
I believe the title I picked for if I remember right, one of the early lines in the game mentioned you'd become friends with your partner forever or for a lifetime of adventure. Something like that. The Lucario and Delphox evolutions were added to this picture reference the plot, not just because they were the final forms.
So here is my tribute to one of my favorite games I ever played. ^^

I remember sitting there watching the credits roll at the end of the main bit of the story and I was left going "this is not okay.. in any sense of the word..." A grown, 29 year old adult is sitting there wondering how things went so wrong for it to sucker punch you in the gut so hard. Same team for me going through it; a Riolu named Lycian and a Fennekin named Tamamo.
Having played the previous games in the series, I thought I was ready for the inevitable "my job is done it's time for me to leave" moment at the end
And then they went and did that. The magnificent bastards threw us a curveball.
Now, to be fair, my emotional fortitude was already in shambles since, at the time, I had just a one-two punch to the feels, first from my cat dying, and then me playing through Undertale for the first time (which prompted me to be a complete dork and name my hero and partner Frisk (Cyndaquil because squinty eyes) and Asriel (Riolu because vaguely similar silhouette), respectively- And then fate conspired to once again steal him away from me!), but still.

Yah, your first line there. I was thinking the exact same thing. When it through that curve ball to you, it made you appreciate why the game spent so much time on character development. It wasn't some arbitrary kiddie addition.
Aww, that's too bad about your cat. Always a shame when that happens. As for Undertale, I've never played it. Someone sort of ruined the game for me and I doubt I'll ever play it.
