Past: Sam one of the strongist of his people yet his people was like soldiers, which why Miles try to take them into his army, the stronger they are to help enforce his rule.
but Sam did not like Miles way as if people got in the way and he didn't like it was shoot and leave them dead.

Sam was fed up with it and attacked, he was able to take over a base all by himself until Miles' second in command came along and fight him, it was a fare fight but Sam could not handle the Echidna's power.
Sam was then locked up and his people was force to work in the mines and no longer be soldiers, it was to tell Sam it was his fault and his people will hate him from now on.
