The English 'Riding Hood' which is usually shown as a short, hooded cape (short enough for the tail not to lay on a horse's back when riding) actually started out as the French chaperon which was a highly flexible piece of headgear worn in many different styles. The earliest Red Riding Hood tales seem to have begun in France, and were first published in France before they became popular in England, Germany and the rest of Europe.

(Took a few courses in Storytelling and its history during my latest college bout, and we went extensively into the symbolism of the earliest RRH tales. Interesting and extremely warped (by modern standards!) stuff.)
