Heart of Gold Right Side (week 2)
The only way I'll ever upload anything topless >.> However given this context I'm sure Cassandra wouldn't mind. I'd see these more as open heart pictures and hopefully some of my more car savvy watchers will be able to notice and point things out to wanna help out.
So this week we managed to take the old rusty and crumbling hood off of Cassandra in my quest to restore and nurse her back to health. The intent was to take the hood off and see if her engine was still in operating condition by turning the one bolt a full revolution. That didn't happen because of the radiator shroud, but we did manage to get a lot of other things done. I cleared out a big nest of some kind of creature that in the early years called Cassandra home, my dad identified the engine as a small block 283 cubic inch 175 horsepower engine which was as reliable as a mountain, that she's factory duel exhaust, six bladed fan behind the radiator, finally discovered she IS indeed equipped with power steering, discovered the previous owner had filled her up with oil before parking her 20 years ago (sadly it's all no good), removed the spring on the hood latch, took that nasty deteriorating hood off, greased up the screws on the hood hinges and radiator shroud, put wires back on that had fallen off of the spark plugs (Thank GOD they were made to length so that was easy, inspected the front clip which looks a-okay, found the gas pedal which is still usable despite being buried outside of her in the field, discovered that some vacuum tubes on the vac advance are gone and the whole unit needs replaced, learned the firewall is good, found the wires for the battery, got the paint code, tore out that old ruined insulation on the hood, and started cleaning out the spiderwebs and dirt which were as thick as twine!! I've come to the conclusion I need to replace the ignition and all the locks because once again no one can find any records on her to want to get a new key or tell me when she was made specifically. I myself only found JUST ENOUGH information to provide so that the previous owner could get the title reprinted. Aside from that I can't prove that she didn't just drop out of the sky one day. We laid the hood back on without bolting it back on since it needs replaced and we're going to put in a simple bungee system to just pop it up for ease of working. It's tied down currently to keep the junk from blowing in there. The frame in the front from what we can see is a box frame and looks ready to go aside from surface rust. The springs look alright, might need new shocks, and we're going to plan a moving operation to pull her up out of the ground and bring her down here before the end of the year. So far it looks promising!

I literally saw this on the front page just a moment ago dude, I thought it was weird as I don't normally see pictures of engines on FA. I clicked on it because why not and was surprised to see it was from you. XD I'm glad you finally got some engine pictures up, I could gush over those all day. It's really nice to hear your dad is chipping in and helping even if it's begrudgingly.
That's a shame about the pulley test there, but I can see that now, that shroud would be in the way. Have you checked if maybe you can get in at it from underneath? I can see why you guys didn't bother taking the shroud off, it doesn't look like it comes off easily.. or at all.. I wonder if it's one piece with the radiator. Though I guess if you were going to take out the radiator to do the test, this would be the time to do it, while it's got old bad coolant in it or non at all. Did you guys do a fluid check other then oil? See if you're lucky and they left transmission fluid in her transmission. From what I've been told that it's good for the tranny to have fluid left in it for all the time sitting as it keeps the rubber seals and such from drying out and shrinking/cracking.
That'll be the biggest most important thing is fluid research. It might not be as bad as with a 50s car. But it can be easy to just assume you can use the same modern fluids and maybe ruin something by doing so. For example Mitzi's Ford-o-matic uses fluid Type-A which isn't used anymore and I had a hard as hell time finding.
That's a real shame Cassandra's distributor is mounted on the rear there. That's seriously the worst place to have it, it's one of the things I actually dislike about Mitzi's Yblock cept here's is rear mounted AND mounted at a angle. It just sucks to get at is all, not much room back there, Carburetor getting in your way, you have to lean your whole body over top the engine or over her fender.. just sucks all around. So her vacuum advance is borked huh? I think I see the line for it right there over top her engine there.. you said the line is missing? When he says it'll have to be replaced does he mean just the hose or the whole damn distributor? If so how can he tell? Did he just open up the cap and look in there and have a trained enough eye to tell? Even so buddy, she should still idle okay with a bad advance, you can ask your dad I think he'll agree.
Oh and you don't normally have to worry about matching the sparkplug wires to the plug, on the plug ends. Every where is a different length, so you just put the wire on the plug it reaches to. It's on the distributor end unplugging them that they all look the same and you can loose track of which is which. Best to put little tape tabs on every where with a number to keep track.
Are you and your dad planning to take off the valve covers and look at those? Maybe do the old hammer tap test to see if any valves are stuck? Making sure beforehand might save you bending a pushrod like I did.
As for the power-steering (congrats) I'd have no idea what type of power steering fluid they used in the 60s. Again, getting that shop manual will tell you that.
So what do you guys expect to get done before I get there?

X'D lol Dude who else but me would upload pictures of a car restoration to a furry website? And the longer he stays up there and the more he looks over things the more I hear him saying "Well (insert part here) is still good." and "Well that doesn't look so bad" lol I think my Ameri-Can do spirit is rubbing off on him.
It's only been delayed for now. Dad and I found the screws where that shroud connects to the rest of the housing. We hit them all with WD-40 and we're letting them soak over night and some time coming up we're going to try that test. For now we're focusing on cleaning her up before tackling that kind of stuff. Within the next week or so we should have that block tested. I don't think dad's planning on getting under Cassandra any time too soon either lol considering there's like 4 inches of clearing between her underbelly and the ground where she's sunken in. But from what I've heard with Buddy she's sitting up there with a full tank of gas, full oil, and everything else. He was thinking about trying to fix her up until the final days where he finally called me to come meet him. He just never had the time. She's just sat there in limo all these years waiting to go.
Yeah I hear you man! lol and I know better to think that I can just slap in any old fluid! I think I have a good replacement oil for her that's high in Zync. I'm also thinking of just getting the lead additive too just to be sure to make sure her Engine is nice and happy when I add in the Marvel's Mystery oil, and eventually if she can work without the Lead Additive I'll slowly back her off of it. But the Mystery Oil is going to be a new staple for her!
lol well hey I don't mind it being in a hard to get to place, just means I get to show how much I care with the extra effort! lol and I figure if I have to lay over the side it'll be like giving her a big ol hug any time I have to do work on her. lol and no, he just noticed the big crack in it was all. And yeah dad's saying it'll be no problem to idle but he's not confident she'll be moving under her own power before he wants to move her outside my bed room.
Actually no, dad's saying he's so confident that the engine's going to move just fine he's saying that he doesn't see us needing to take that precaution. Given how much of a stick in the mud and a negative nelly he's been so far, to have him show that kind of confidence in her is enough to make he consider taking that gamble.
I'll have to look into that.
And the rust being under control, trunk lid lock being drilled out, interior being more cleaned up, Engine compartment being free of large clumps of grass and spider webs, her being cleared out, and possibly moved to the side yard. If money allows she'll also have a new hood, locks, ignition, key, and battery by the time you get here.

You silly fur you.. ; P Well not as silly as I look on here I guess. I'd really like to see this dad of yours on camera, you should film the next time you two are looking at her, I wanna hear this praise with my own ears. lol
Oh good, that's great to hear it comes off. Sounds great, sounds like you'll have her all cleaned up and ready for serious working on when I get there.. oooh.. 4 inches of clearance huh? >.- Those are some pretty tightly squashed boobs.. *punched and sent flying by Cassandra* Lol you'll get to enjoy the wonderful sight of confusion I got to enjoy when you empty that gas tank and bring that shoe-polish smelling completely black tar colored varnished gasoline up to your local mechanics to be disposed of. I remember back when I got Mitzi, the guys were like "where the heck did you get this stuff out of?" Before you ask, yeah that gas tank will need to be replaced, it's PROBABLY full of rust like Mitz's was. Hopefully your fuel line is clear or can be cleared. Poor baby girl, she was all ready to go for months and months just waiting till her fluids went rotten.. : (
Sounds good, yeah I remember recommending that Lucus Classic Car oil.. that stuff is pretty good. Heheh you're gonna be putting Cassandra on Marvel's supplements huh? I just picture her being fussy like a big baby, you telling you repeatedly to stick out her tongue and drink.
Lol just watch it big guy, I hate to see that rusty fender crumple under all that Greaser mass. ;) But yeah I'm sure Cass won't mind at all having you laying all over her, the crush she has on you and all. lol A crack huh? I wonder if you might be able to get a temporary fix for that, maybe some JB Weld or gorilla tape wrapped around the crack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JynysLv9R4 Oh man, can you imagine Cass' face outside your window? hehe
Really? I'll be surprised if you don't have to replace the fuel pump but I guess we can try. At most we'd loose a day as parts stores usually take a day to get a part in if they dont have it in stock.

Way ahead of you! I filmed us up there last night. I'm compiling short videos which I'm going to have my one friend put together so we can have one big Episode one and then move on for other episodes until she's driving under her own power. Lol so you'll get to hear it yourself when that's ready to be uploaded.
I should indeed man ^w^ I just need to juggle my funds a little bit. I might even have to take up a second job in order to do all the things I want to plus keep Cassandra on the fast track to recovery. lol and I can only imagine their reaction when I show up with Gas that's been sitting since 95! And I'm actually planning on dropping her tank and trying to wash it out if it doesn't have holes in it. And yeah, it's heartbreaking to imagine her sitting there for 20 years as hope slowly fades away and the grass slowly overtakes her.
Yeah unfortunately I can't find that in my area and off the Walmart store it's like 100 or 130 dollars. The substitute I found looks promising though. XD well she'll just have to learn to take her medicine!
Her fenders are still actually really strong, XD that's another thing my dad kept complimenting yesterday, her "front clip". And hey if that is fixable I'm all for it! It'd probably cost less to seal that crack than it would to get a new part shipped in. lol it would offer me not moment when I couldn't look outside and draw the life giving force of determination and conviction!
Well we'll see. lol I don't know if we won't have to replace it or not. But I do want to see just how closely Cassandra clung to life while she was up there. I'm going to try to go up there today and continue to clean her up.

lol well like any good American I choose not to do things because they are easy, but because they are hard! And she's been flying back together pretty easily so far. I'm hoping my luck and my unbridled enthusiasm continue to help me charge through this. I'm going to start attacking the rust here soon and try to get that under control before March. ^w^ I always love hearing from you my friend!
lol then grab a chair and stick around because I've got plenty to go around and it's more addictive than Netflix! I'm also filming this to upload it to Youtube as an episodic series detailing her restoration. I'm hoping by February to have that rust beaten back into retreat!
