Here you are. Back again. You keep coming back here. Until now you never really had a reason to do so. Sure, in the past you liked the silence, the feeling of being alone. It was nice knowing that there was no one around. This part of town, it’s been abandoned for quite a while now, but even so no crime has taken root here. There’s no trash on the street, well no more than usual. There’s no graffiti, and no broken storefronts, gangs never took up residence here, and addicts never wandered this way for their habits. Perhaps it’s the uneasy feeling most people get out here that kept them away, some force that prevented them from wanting to disturb whatever lies out this way.
Today, the sky is clear, and the weather is cold. It’s winter, and the snow has fallen down, painting most of the city a nice white color. You’re walking to the station where you met your first true friend, a mysterious little creature you met one late autumn day who showed you kindness when it was most needed.
You clutch your green blanket tight over your shoulders. You never could bring yourself to get rid of it, so you kept it, just holding it because it feels nice.
Sure enough, when you do eventually make it to the station the same train is there waiting for you. Black as the night, with a roof as red as fire. The snow in front of the open door has melted, as the only warmth anywhere nearby is pouring out from it. You climb aboard and shut the door behind you.
Turning, you find yourself face to face with a looming ten foot tall kangaroo, who looks down on you.
“OHHH! We have a guest!” she says, her voice is soft, and hints at an english accent, perhaps irish even. Her outfit is strange, pink and cream coloured it looks similar to a maid’s outfit, though, perhaps more designed for childcare.
Before you can react, she picks you up and hugs you, she’s surprisingly strong. “My name is Catherine,” she says, “Though you may call me Nana Cat! Now, who might you be dearie?”
You tell her your story, your name, your life, how you met Syrus here and how he invited you back. She just smiles and nods as if she has heard this a million times before.
“Well then, you must be here for Syrus! Oh, it’s a play date then! Oh oh! I’ll need to get you ready first for the play date! Let’s go!” she says, though, it’s not like you have many options, since she’s still holding you.
She takes you back to the nursery you were in last time. The room is warm and feels as if there was just a large amount of people here mere moments ago. She takes you over to the changing table, where she deftly removes your clothes.
“Oh my! You should have said something earlier!” she says, “Your diaper is soggy already! You could have caught a rash if I hadn’t decided to change you!” She removes your soiled diaper and puts a new one on. “This one is twice as thick! It should last your whole play date!” It’s nice, though it’s a light pink color. She leaves you on the table for a minute or two as she walks over to a nearby closet. She pulls out a large yellow onesie with matching mittens and booties, and a butterfly design. She walks back over and slips it over you before you can reject it, snapping the buttons shut tight!
“Daww, now aren’t you a cute little one,” she says, setting you down on the floor. “Go on, give me a spin!”
Reluctantly you shyly spin around for her, showing off your full outfit. “Perfect!” she says. “Let’s see, diaper change, check. Outfit, check! Toys! Aha, I knew I had forgotten something!” She hops over to a nearby toy chest and begins rummaging around. “What would be good for my baby’s first play date?” she hums to herself. “How about... aha!” She pulls out a bunny backpack, it’s light blue and wearing a pink diaper, she opens it up and shows you inside are three plush blocks, each one having one of three primary colors on each side. She then puts the backpack on your back.
“You are just so precious, I could eat you up!” she says happily giggling to herself.
You begin thinking to yourself, you just met this woman, she’s stronger, and bigger than you, she’s always happy to see you, and she keeps giving you things to make you happy. You don’t know why, but you really like her, you almost want to stay with her.
“Now let’s see... Syrus won’t be back for a little while, oh, but you shouldn’t be tired for your play date!” she says, picking you up once more, “That settles it then! You’re taking a nap little one!” She cradles you in her arms and walks you over to the large armchair in the corner, sitting herself in it.
“Ah, now this is one of my favorite bedtime stories,” she says, picking up a book on the nearby end table. “Once upon a time, there was a fluffy little bunny...” she begins telling you a slow, simple, and very childish bedtime story. What’s more, despite it being so simple, you find yourself becoming very tired. Slowly but surely you doze off more and more. The last thing you remember before falling asleep is Cat putting you down in one of the cribs in the room, tucking you in, and turning out the lights.
You awake sometime later, it’s cold, and you find yourself on a bench at the station... was it all a dream? You turn to leave and notice, you have your green blanket and the bunny backpack is sitting next to you on the bench. A note is on it:
“You were too tired to play! Come back another day!” - Nana Cat.
