Please critique! Constructive criticism and ideas would help tremendously!
So this is the first of a Speed Painting Series. Why you ask? Because my speed is one of if not my worst trait when it comes to artwork. And I've always been thinking to myself "you just need to practice and you'll get faster naturally" ... 5.5 years later and it's still an issue... And I know it's a mixture of things. My perfectionist attitude and lack of hard deadlines being a dastardly duo to rival Bonnie and Clyde. So now, as artistic preparation for future comics, I'm going to be doing one or two of these every free weekend I have. Most will probably be portraits (given 3 or so hours decided before starting), but there may be other sorts that will get a bit more time. And this is where I hope you guys can come in.
While I wanted to start with some one familiar I'll also have to branch out. So If you'd like a portrait (or maybe something else) of one of your characters, leave a comment with their info and references. I'll be picking primarily different archetypes, but otherwise it'll mostly be by whim. I'll definitely need examples of these sorts of characters: Scaled, feathered, skinned, skinned and feathered/furred/scaled.
As for this one the time was 3 hours 40 minutes.

hmmm... critique is difficult, moreso since its a speed paint, but here goes.
I like the tone and texture work you put in on the hair and ears
I would like it if that had carried down into the face more, it seems to fade out as you get into the face, but does start coming back as you move down to the neck.
The outfit I'm really not sure on.
The few I've seen similar to this, the chest is fairly rigid and holds it shape(star trek dress uniform, vintage ds9, late next gen)
Looking under the arm on the left the folds really nice, but as you come out to the chest, it changes and lessens, and as you get to the upper chest the folds and texture are gone.
When you go down towards the belly and groin there is very little fold or shadow except the tringular zone on bottom left in the white area. So for the white and blue of the uniform, either more folds/shadows, or less if its one of those stiffer, more shaped uniforms
I'm thinking the Blue and white is either a vest or sleeveless coat, as the black Sleeves have more folds/shades, making me think it's a different fabric.
If that is not the case, then I would recommend either bringing more folds/shadows into the blue and white, or pull a lot of that beautful fabric fold work out, go simpler with the shading and more rigid lines to indicate a more firm and shaped fabric.
Nice work on the buttons and reflections on them.
Also like the rays of light behind the chracter, nice added touch to the composition.
If this is a uniform, what indicates rank or department?
Hope this is helpful.
Cheers

Thank you very much! Not too much I can really address, but this is exactly the sort of input I was looking for!
Wile working on the face I was more focused on the patterning and shaping, but I should have been trying to texture the fur into those patterns. Given the time constraints I probably couldn't do as much for swaths of similar colored fur, but in the next few I may give that a shot.
As to the cloths that's all actually what I was going for. It's suposed to be a lab coat styled after one of those older kinds that button on the shoulder (the kind Unkle Kage is wearing here). As you can see the front of that sort does hang rather loose, but I am a bit shallow on the number of folds. Probably had something to do with using up so much time on the face that I ended up spending only 40 minutes on the cloths, lol! XP
Seriously though thank you. Your character will probably end up getting into one of these. Not used to painting braids and he'd make decent shaping and the fore mentioned swath texturing.
