So, I just posted aproximately 60% of what was originally going to be my first published novel in my patreon. I've been working on this from 2013 onwards, and I'm still writing and re-writing the whole thing.
I have plans for a proper publication, the same formula but with more functional writing. This version is essentially the "sketch", an experiment to guide myself. The rest of the chapters, aside from the very last, will also be hosted here. I also have plans for a script version, though I doubt it will be picked up.
The original idea for Fallen Máni came all the way back in 2010, with the release of Disney's Tangled. As a fan of mythology in general I was very impressed with what was clearly an allegorical solar myth, and wanted to do basically the opposite: a lunar myth.
The very first idea I had was set in a more fantastical world. There, the Moon had been struck down by the Sun, resulting in a desert world. The Moon's absence caused an imbalance: the oceans were gone, daylight became harsher and lasted longer, and whatever remained of the night was dark and full of demons. More worryingly, people were starting to be born without souls. The protagonist, a young woman, set out to find the Moon to fix things, and in the process learned the value of sacred feminity.
Over time, I began to consider a more urban fantasy setting, as if this sort of thing happened in our world rather than a generic fantasy land. This coincided with an increasing interest in Germanic and Norse mythology, which have masculine lunar deities. This sparked a realization of sorts within me: what if the protagonist was male, and actually the reincarnation of the Moon itself?
Initially, this idea was reflected through an allegorical gender dysphoria angle. The idea that the Moon was inherently feminine was still prevalent in my head - being the norm in romance languages and modern neopaganism - so the protagonist was originally going to suddenly undergo a dettachment from his gender identity. As the Moon's influence within him grew, so did his confusion and depression, and his personal relationships began to fall apart.
Eventually, I dropped this idea, as the notion that the Moon was inherently feminine started to become ridiculous, especially given the context of the mythology I had now latched unto. Still, hints of this remain in the current version, as seen in Sól's conversation with Manuel and his own reflections.
Ultimately, the thing that inspired the final take as it is was this song:

It shaped the overall atmosphere and emotion that would dominate the story from then on, as well as Jonathan's character. Credito goes to

Both Hati and Sköll were characters the moment the story shifted into urban fantasy, but they underwent a few re-writes. Hati was always sort of a tragic character, while Sköll started as more generically malicious, until I decided to give him some self-worth issues of his own.
Sól, Bil and Hjúki have undergone several changes as well. The latter two in particular started off as more generic and quirky side-kicks.
Other characters have been added along the way, and haven't diverged significantly.
