Joined a DnD 5E group that allowed homebrew races and classes, so I scoured the internet and found enough to make a Magpie King build, based on another comic series I've been developing. Not 100% accurate but it's there and it's made playing 5E's groanworthy character creation a little more enjoyable.
Name: Lyr, the Magpie King
Race: Tengu (dnd: harpy)
Class: (dnd: curseslinger)
Background: Urchin
Lyr was born of a Celestial prince and his serving girl, a human, which often produces a tengu, a magicless halfbreed who belong in neither world. Their relationship revealed, Lyr's mother was banished, and she lived a pitiful existence in the back alleyways of city streets before an illness took her life. Left to fend for himself, Lyr was picked up by the street gangs, pickpockets and burglars. where he became quite popular and gained a kind of leadership.
Most tengu have a fascination with magic despite being incapable of using it, largely due to their Celestial parentage, which leads them to fight for trinkets and charms, or any kind of thing with an enchantment on it. The few who show any kind of magical talent often lean towards simple hexes and minor tricks, the easiest kinds of magic. Lyr appeared to possess considerable magical aptitude, but without a teacher, never managed to cultivate it, collecting arcane gestures and carving runes into his feathers at most.
One day a celestial arrived in town, accompanied by royal guard; a princess, heir apparent to the new king. Identifying herself as Lyr's half-brother, she declared her quest to retrieve her brother. Now that her father had become king, he was free of the shadow that prevented him from pursuing his human lover and son, and could welcome them back.
However, the royal guard had been looking for such an opportunity as an otherwise defenseless royal, to steal royal wings, and take their powers for their own. Royalty had not been viewed favorable by celestials for a great while, and now those who would seek to dethrone the royals could put their plans into action.
In the back streets of the city, away from public notice, they struck the princess down, and carved off her brilliantly white snowy-owl wings. In her dying moments, the princess willed her power to a blood relative: Lyr, who was watching from relative secrecy. The wings vanished, and magically grafted themselves into the fabric of Lyr's being, granting him his magical birthright.
Knowing little other magic, Lyr used celestially-powered hexes to slay the guards, magically dismembering, sealing senses with growths, and causing other hideous disfigurements. His sister dead and enemies vanquished, Lyr could have returned to the kingdom of his father and assumed a place as heir; however, he still harbored intense anger against his blood father, for submitting to regency and abandoning his mother to die in the streets. In that moment, he vowed to topple the celestial kingdom, and more: all tyrants, dictators, or even the coup within the guards; any and all who would declare themselves rulers without will of the people.
Though not strong enough at that moment, Lyr was handed the keys to his future, and he set out to make as many allies as he could, and cultivate whatever magics he could get his hands on.
