Hesseah pronounced Hess-e-ah are a species of demi-human that resemble mostly a human covered in scales, however their key feature is the placement of their scales upon their body and the multiple snake headed tails that they possess.
Hesseah vary in size and coloration much like normal snakes, some known to be around 4 foot tall while some larger known breeds can be as large as seven foot five inches. They are commonly fairly lithe in their figure with more gaunt features, though this is a feature that is dependent on breed, some larger species known to possess more girth. Their snake like features are known to mimic a diverse range of serpents from vipers all the way to boa, there are a few rumors of more Hesseah resembling more mythic serpents however this is far from well documented.
The species lack any form of body hair, the areas which darker body hair would be on a human replaced with an area of scale plates like a serpent, such as facial hair, head, eyebrows, armpits, and even regions such as the pubis. While other areas of the body have the possibility of being bald or the head and eyebrow scales being connected there is however always a trail of scales that reaches from the back of the head all the way down to their tails.
The tails of the Hesseah vary in quantity, length, and size. The snake heads on the end of each tail are around half the size of the Hesseah ’s own head, the length of the tail normally almost the length of their body, and the quantity rarely below four with higher amounts known to be nine or more, this feature being less breed dependent.
The snake heads themselves are fully functioning excluding a lack of brain, the Hesseah itself instinctual controls these serpent tails acting as if each tail was its own living creature however using them for its own purposes such as hunting or defending itself. The Hesseah find the notion that these tails are not alive as if being told that up is down, the thought rarely ever becoming true due to the deeply ingrained instinctual urge to act as those these snake tails are alive. It is believed that this instinct is an act to make the Hesseah appear more numerous and threatening to predators, a smaller claim is that the Hesseah do this as certain breeds live in solitude and due to their more human brain they require a degree of companionship which giving the snakes personality provides.
Hesseah frequently have fangs normally with some form of venom, once again both factors being largely breed dependent. The venom normally to kill small animals as Hesseah in the wild will prowl through trees or sneak along the floor, using their tails to strike out and kill the occasional bird or small animal. Their mouth is able to stretch open more than a human would be able to however they do not tend to swallow their food hole, instead taking overly large mouthfuls which their jagged molars shred for them.
Hesseah society tends to learn more towards the concept of civility and decency, many Hesseah mingling with high human society after donning disguises to hide their more serpentine features, the more effeminate of the species normally having greater ease as males will have a full beard of scales which they can find it difficult to hide.
One incredibly common trait of their society however is body modification. The inclusion of metals piercings being second only to their most common tradition of scale raising. At young ages the scales of their bodies will be lifted with implements and given time to heal, once healed the scale will be raised slightly, possibly loose. Hesseah use this raising of the scales to give themselves distinctive appearance, for example a warrior stripe in the form of scales pointing upwards, giving their scales a spiky jagged area on their scalp. The loosened raised scales are used to normally fit accessories into, feathers being a frequent accessory allowing many females to have a bouquet of feathers as a headdress, though examples of fur and even plants have been known to be included. The raising of scales is done generally on the heads of both their own and their snakes, the process taking place at a young age those less frequent the older the Hesseah get excluding situations where the Hesseah assumes an important role such as noble, shaman, or doctor.
