How do you know what works and what didn't?

Just, a feeling I get... Something just looks right about it. Sometimes it can be a hit and miss, but it's still tends to be a working progress. Like, shading with blue or red instead of black. I noticed from a comic that the shading seemed more blue then ''grey'', so I tried it out, and I really liked it, so I tried it out, I then used other colours to see what worked and it turned out Red works nicely too. Just little things like that, it can make a big impact!
